CBS thought they could muddy the waters, and ignored the other points.
Nothing about kerning. Nothing about the paper size. Nothing about the stationary. Nothing about the widow or the son. Nothing about proportional spacing. Nothing about the difference in tone and writing style from other memos by this author. Nothing about the anachronistic language.
They changed the story from coming from his personal files, to admitting that CBS only had a photocopy to work from. The said some typewriters had superscript. Yes, but how common were they? Would they have one of those typewriters in an Air National Guard office?
They said the font Times Roman had been around for many years before the memo. Yes, but could you do it on a typewriter?
Rather said a lot about the criticism of the story is coming from partisan political operatives. Like all the forensic experts cited by ABC News and the Washington Post?
Marcel Matley, the expert who CBS cited, seemed to be a lot more focused on the signature (that others have said doesnt match other documents) than the points cited by others.
Moore, the author who had written two books critical of Bush, said the fact that the White House has not called the documents fake is probably because they know they are true.
Also, oddly, Rather sounded very hoarse.
I'm shaking my head right now. Of all the ways to make a defense, this was about the weakest.
This looks like piling on to me.
:)
STICK TO YOUR GUNS DAN RATHER!!!!
(when they fire his ass it will that much sweeter)
Bump
Question is, do ABC and CNN have the guts to follow up on this.
Blather's defense was such an unbelievable farce. He completely changed what the real accusations and inconsistincies around the document were, and responded to just the flimsly accusations, when there are real serious discrepencies.
It's sickening they are eating it up. I see a few members of the MSM are out in full force with "Experts now say they are real" horsecrap.
These people make the deceit of the old Soviet Union look like childs play.
Unfortunately, things like this don't lead to the firing of the anchoman. Some low level fact checker will get canned, maybe a junior grade producer will resign, but that will be it.
The CBS/democrat stance seems simple enough.
Call Barnes daughter, Killians son and widow liars. In fact call anyone who disagrees a liar and continue to push their AWOL theory anyway even if it is based on a forgery.
Much like the "feminists" who stood beside Clinton as he groped, fondled, and diddled his way through his political career, CBS has exposed itself as nothing more than rank hypocrites and Democrat partisans.
But I'm afraid it won't matter. A hallmark of the left is that they lack shame, and never take responsibility for their actions. CBS will simply drop any mention of this incident down the memory hole, and will continue to sell advertising and broadcast the news as if it doesn't matter, and as if they really are an "objective" news source. And some people will continue to watch.
But a significant (and growing) portion of America knows better, and will never trust them.
But Rather ignores the blatant fact that the story itself came from "partisan political operatives" such as himself.
Is he the one who interviewd Saddam Hussain
Well, U.S. socialists survived the collapse of Communism! Remarkable!
They are pros, not amateurs, at lying.
I like that. Finally, the dots have been connected.
Aha! Soooo Mr. Bush... so you won't comment on charges that you took your dog Barney to a sex club in Austin?!
What everyone seems to lose sight of it that CBS has the burden of proof on the documents. It's not enough to say that in some theoretical universe, Killian might have been able to acquire a high end typewriter and printer and have created the documents. They have to prove that he DID acquire that typewriter and printer and create the documents. They have to prove how they acquired the documents from his house when his family denies their existence. Rather and his cohorts say, "We'll, you skeptics have to *disprove* that these documents are authentic." Not true.
In the end, CBS has accomplished its mission.......
Replacing the Swift Boat Vets with this.
That's all they care about.
Swollowe his own 38.
Gosh Dan, you feel that your bias can not be questioned by the unwashed masses?
