Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004 8:19 p.m. EDT Ben Barnes' 'Daughter': My Dad Lied About Bush A woman purporting to be Amy Barnes, daughter of former Texas Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes, said Thursday that her father had fabricated claims that he used his influence to get President Bush into the Texas Air National Guard 36 years ago. In a phone call to WBAP's Mark Davis radio show in Dallas, Texas, Ms. Barnes told guest host Monica Crowley that her father was an "opportunist" who had lied about Bush's Guard record during a "60 Minutes II" broadcast Tuesday night.

BARNES: I love my father very much, but he's doing this for purely political reasons. He is a big Kerry fund-raiser and he is writing a book also. And [the Bush story] is what he's leading the book off with. ... He denied this to me in 2000 that he did get Bush out [of Vietnam service]. Now he's saying he did.
CROWLEY: Did he tell you, Amy – and I'm glad I have you on the line with me – did your father tell you that he was prepared to do this on behalf of John Kerry – go after President Bush like this? BARNES: He told me he was going to do it. In fact, I talked to him a couple of months ago. He told me he was writing the book. He told me that he was going to be talking about this. And he knows that I – we have very diverse political opinions. He knows my opinions and we get into this debate every time I see him. But, you know, he said that he was going to be talking about it. CROWLEY: Now you're saying, Amy, that he has had two separate stories on President Bush's Guard duty during the Vietnam era? BARNES: Yes, yes. This came out in 2000 and I asked him then, at the time, if he [helped get Bush into the Guard]. He said: "No, absolutely not. I did not do that." - CROWLEY: So, I hate to put you in this position, but I will ask you, do you think your father, Ben Barnes who was on "60 Minutes II" with Dan Rather last night – do you believe that he lied on the air to the American people last night about President Bush?
BARNES; Yes, I do. I absolutely do. And I think he's doing he's doing it for purely political, opportunistic reasons – trying to get John Kerry elected and trying to make Bush look like the bad person. ... Like I said, he's going to be trying to promote his book that he's got coming out. From the headline and from the use of the word "purport," it sounds as though there is some doubt that this woman is really Barnes's daughter. Is that the case? When I heard this interview Iw as taken aback and wondered what her agenda was, for it's unusual for a daughter to humiliate her father in such a serious way.
Why is "daughter" in quotes in this headline? I don't think there's any doubt she's his daughter.

If Fox doesn't do a good follow up on this, I will be furious with them. They are the only hope in keeping this alive. Where are the Republican champaign advisors? Remember the clinton lie, within hours, he had his rapid response team on every network. Notice, Harkin, McAwful, the mantra was "he lied to the American people". This is the message they are to bring forth, not that he was AWOL. All they have to do is plant the thought. The networks will do the rest.

Hannity interviewed Amy Barnes (maiden name) ofn Fri Sep 10, 04 and she said more or less the above. However, on Hannity's radio show she said that a Ms Hinton (Barnes spokesgal) had called and emailed her not to give any more interviews and Barnes himself told her not to give interviews. Rachel who works for Hannity read aloud on the radio a note from Hinton saying that Amy was cancelling, but that was not Amy's wish and she went on the air with Hannity anyway to say in so many words that her dad was lying for political reasons, but she was retiscent to use the word "liar" because her dad had talked to her laying on the guilt.
She's his daughter all right and a big Republican who very much wants Bush to win. She said she was converted during the Reagan years.
She phoned Monica on impulse after hearing her talk about the program.
She is now suffering a little remorse about that, hoping it won't have fatal repercussions in her relationship with her father, whom she loves.
I don't think she dreamed that her call would have such national exposure. But she'll stick by what she said, because it's true.
I can understand the questioning of whether or not this person is really Barnes' daughter since, as far as I can tell from the thread, she has only been a voice on the phone.
While the conversation sounds genuine and the reasons stated for Barnes changing his story are plausible, I think that until we have a person on camera that can be be solidly identified as Barnes' daughter, we are right to be careful and not buy into what we want to believe.
But I also agree with the majority here; the MSM should be investigating this story to determine whether or not it is a Republican "dirty trick" to pay back the Dems for Memogate. The fact that they are NOT following up with Barnes' daughter strongly suggests that this story has feet that they are trying to shackle. If they can ignore it and deny it, it doesn't exist.
The whole problem with this will be the Sandy Berger Effect. The SBE means that a damning story erupts and simply gets ignored. That's what will happen here. It will be denied and soon ignored. Independent voters won't have a clue what went on, and all Rather has to say is that the challenges to his credibility are "partisan internet and talk radio" people, and the independent voter will understand that this is nothing.
So we must figure a way at FR not just to uncover this kind of thing, but to also carry it through to completion.
