ITALY
Milan Airport Radar Fails for Second Day in Row, Causing Delays
from Bloomberg on Thursday, October 07, 2004

The radar system at Milan's Linate Airport failed for the third time in two days, delaying flights and disrupting travel for thousands of passengers, civil aviation and airport officials said.

The radar at Milan's Linate airport failed for three minutes at about 10 a.m., said a spokesman for Enav SpA, Italy's state-owned air traffic control company. The radar controls air traffic of all of north-western Italy. Its failure caused delays at airports in Milan, Genoa, Turin and Bergamo, airport officials said.

The failure halted takeoffs for an hour and delayed landings at Milan's two airports, said a spokeswoman for Sea SpA, the airports' manager.

Electrical power outages blocked the radar system twice yesterday for five minutes at 9:25 a.m. local time and again for 20 minutes at 6:30 p.m., Enav said in a statement.

``At no point were safety levels diminished," Enav said.
