Real chemical cloud interrupts fake emergency

PATERSON, N.J. (AP) — A small chemical cloud rising from a sewer sickened firefighters taking part in a bioterror preparedness drill in Passaic County.

The drill on Saturday morning was in full swing when the thick cloud set off a fire alarm at the Board of Education offices. Firefighters who responded had to use their respirators after gagging on the fumes.

Firefighters flushed out the sewer line using a hose. They were not sure of the chemicals' origin.

A man walking by the sewer complained of throat irritation and was taken to a local hospital, according to The Sunday Record of Bergen County. His injuries were not believed to be life threatening.
