(Senator Mark) Dayton (D-MN) Closes D.C. Office Over Security Concerns. Advises no travel to D.C.
Associated Press ^ | October 12, 2004

Posted on 10/12/2004 2:28:30 PM EDT by wallcrawlr

WASHINGTON-- Sen. Mark Dayton said Tuesday he is closing his Washington office because of a classified intelligence report which made him fear for the safety of his staff.

Dayton, D-Minn., said the office will be closed while Congress is in recess through Election Day, with his staff working out of his Minnesota office and in Senate space off Capitol Hill.

``I take this step out of extreme, but necessary, precaution to protect the lives and safety of my Senate staff and my Minnesota constituents, who might otherwise be visiting my Senate office in the next three weeks,'' he said on a call with reporters.

``I feel compelled to do so because I will not be here in Washington to share what I consider to be an unacceptably greater risk to their safety,'' he said.

Pretty sobering info. I wonder if others will follow. Hmmmm...considering that he is a Dem; I guess that he doesn't share Kerry's ideology that terrorism is just a nuisance.

Hi UK Guy and welcome. I am not sure what GLP is, but yes, I believe this may be the same incident.

Notice that he is a Democrat and not a Republican. Remember DHS does not play politics.

"Terrorists Declare Ultimatum to S. Korea"

By Park Song-wu
Staff Reporter

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A terrorist organization claiming to be affiliated with al-Qaida has warned of attacks on South Korea and its troops in Iraq unless the troops are withdrawn within two weeks, a Foreign Affairs-Trade Ministry official said Tuesday.

The warning message from the ``Martyr Hammound al-Masri battalion,'' datelined Sept. 30, was posted on an Arab-language Web site on Oct. 10, spokesman Lee Kyu-hyung said at a news conference at the ministry."

Hallo Donna, and thanks for the welcome

GLP is another forum where 99% of the posts should be taken with a huge pinch of salt, together with a sprig of parsley :)

They can be quite mischievous over there: someone will post an entirely believable scenario and others will pile in with supporting information, but the entire premise is based on fiction.

Can be quite fun actually once you realize this, some of the posters have a great sense of humour. And once in a while (the other 1% of the posts)something factual turns up as well.

As regards this particular incident, some outrageous claims were made but nothing ever became of them in public, so considering the source we can draw our own conclusions.

Re #4041

That is by far the most telling bit of information I've seen so far. If the congress critters are scared, then we really need to be on alert.

The thing that angers me is how the congress critters think that their lives are more valuable than the lives of ordinary citizens.

I'm already at RED alert so I can't increase my alert status any higher.

Thanks for the sobering post tmp02. Scary but necessary information.

We also had Chris Shays making those remarks he did for last New Years. It was allegedly over a major worry about a dirty bomb. I want to see the intelligence reports privy to Shays and now Dayton so I can make up my own mind. Don't we all!

Remember this (don't have link; text is on my hard drive):

Shays defends Times Sq. warning

By MAGGIE HABERMAN
DAILY NEWS CITY HALL BUREAU

Connecticut Rep. Chris Shays said yesterday that he doesn't regret warning people to stay out of Times Square on New Year's Eve, even though the celebration went off without a hitch.

"I just have gratitude that there [was] not a problem," the Republican told the Daily News. But he added, "It's kind of like someone who swims in shark-infested waters, and they get out and say, 'I did just fine, didn't I?' "

Shays had declared he wouldn't go to Times Square on New Year's Eve "for anything" because of the high-alert terror warnings. The comment drew immediate fire from Mayor Bloomberg, who called on Shays to apologize after New Year's Eve passed.

But Shays said he isn't sorry and added it is "disingenuous to make this an issue of courage, or to make this an issue of faith in New York's police," as some officials did.

He called the NYPD "the finest police force of any in the world."

But Shays, who sits on the House Select Committee on Homeland Security and chairs a terrorism subcommittee, said elected officials must give people enough information to make informed decisions about what they do.

"My attitude is this: You tell people the truth, and you let them make adult decisions," he said. "These alerts either mean something or they don't mean something. . . . I don't know if Mayor Bloomberg would have gone [to Times Square] if he wasn't mayor."

Bloomberg spokesman Ed Skyler replied, "The congressman still doesn't understand that New Yorkers refuse to be terrorized. If he wants to go hide in a cave, that's fine, but we aren't going to.

"Of course, if he wants to make New York City even safer, he can help fix the pork-barrel formula which makes us second to last in homeland security funding," he added.

Do you have a link to the GLP site. A guilty pleasure of mine is that I enjoy reading some of the nutty stuff. One just never knows when one might find an acorn, or a truffle.

I'm glad to see that you quit lurking and jumped in with a very interesting post. Please keep us informed. All input is welcome. We are counting on you and British Chick to let us know what is happening "across the pond". BC has also had some good info.

Again, welcome and thanks for joining us.

He supports the monetary cuts to the military.

Ask him again after the next 911. Ask him if he'd prefer to fight the terrorists personally here; or take it to their caves over there? Ask him if HE has ever served? Of course I doubt this last one. Those who have served rarely advocate cutting our forces.

He's ex-Navy. Blew me away. Served on a PBR in Viet Nam.

The guy's has no problem with a child not telling her parents she's getting an abortion so that tells me what his mind set is. He is also for increasing taxes and decreasing the military budget.

Go figure.

Yesterday gold was $422, so it has dropped today. My gold broker says that if the price of oil keep peaking and world events remain unstable, gold could go to $800 an oz. My gold has already tripled in value.
