The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Muslim group takes responsibility for 9-11: 'We are so sorry'

This September 11 marks the third unforgettable anniversary of the worst mass murder in American history.

After September 11, many in the Muslim world chose denial and hallucination rather than face up to the sad fact that Muslims perpetrated the 9-11 terrorist acts and that we have an enormous problem with extremism and support for terrorism. Many Muslims, including religious leaders, and "intellectuals" blamed 9-11 on a Jewish conspiracy and went as far as fabricating a tale that 4000 Jews did not show up for work in the World Trade Center on 9-11. Yet others blamed 9-11 on an American right wing conspiracy or the U.S. Government which allegedly wanted an excuse to invade Iraq and "steal" Iraqi oil.

STUTTGART/BUDAPEST  (ANS) -- A German court convicted an alleged leftist terrorist Tuesday, September 28, of helping to bomb a busload of Soviet Jews in Hungary in 1991 and extended her sentence to 12 years in prison, ASSIST News Service (ANS) in Budapest learned.

47-year old Andrea Klump, who was already linked to Germany's ultra-left Red Army Faction (RAF), was found guilty by a state court in Stuttgart on 32 counts of being an accessory to attempted murder.

Six people, including four passengers and two policemen escorting the bus, were injured when a remote-controlled 25 kilogram (55 pound) bomb detonated a few seconds early near the Budapest airport. A police escort car that was driving ahead of the bus took the brunt of the blast, the first such terror attack on Hungarian soil.

It lead to increased security around the Budapest airport, as Hungarian government officials pledged the government would remain committed to Russian Jews emigrating to Israel via Hungary.

PALESTINIAN GROUP

In a statement, the court accused Klump of carrying out the bombing along with accomplice Horst Ludwig Meyer for a Palestinian group, "Movement for the Freedom of Jerusalem," which claimed responsibility for the attack.

Investigators said they found DNA evidence in 2001 linking Klump to a Budapest apartment at the time of the attack. The Jerusalem Post newspaper quoted presiding Judge Udo Heissler as saying that Klump was guilty of assisting "a particularly abominable act" by renting apartments and helping prepare the assailants' escape.

Klump denied direct involvement in the attack and has insisted she never belonged to the RAF, which launched more than two decades of attacks against NATO and industrial targets in Germany and Europe until renouncing violence in 1992. The group declared itself disbanded in 1998.

TRAVELING TO BUDAPEST

However Klump admitted to the court last month that she had traveled to Budapest in September of that year and stayed nearly three months saying she knew that Meyer was there on "a mission ordered by Palestinian militants", The Jerusalem Post reported. She reportedly also admitted to managing bookkeeping for the two of them, renting apartments and handling travel plans.

The Stuttgart state court ruled that she must serve a total of 12 years in prison. Klump already serves a nine-year jail sentence imposed in 2001 for attempted murder, hostage-taking and blackmail during a failed 1988 attack against a nightclub, popular with US servicemen near the Spanish city of Cadiz, BosNewsLife monitored.

She was captured in Vienna, Austria, in September 1999 over the Spanish attack, several media said. Meyer, who was with her at the time, was apparently shot dead while resisting arrest.

"Diplomat Cites North Korea as Among Worst Religious Freedom Violators

By Chad Groening and Jenni Parker
September 28, 2004

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "(AgapePress) - The Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom says this year's annual State Department report to Congress on religious liberty around the globe shows that North Korea is one of the worst offenders, with more political and religious prisoners than any other country on Earth.

John Hanford, head of the U.S. Department of State's Office of International Religious Freedom, says it is very difficult to confirm all the information coming out of North Korea. However, he says credible reports indicate that religious believers, particularly Christians, often face terrible persecution, or even death, because of their faith."

SUN AND SAND PLUS TORTURE AND PERSECUTION
Human Rights Violations in Holidaymakers’ Hot Spots

By Wolfgang Polzer
Special to ASSIST News Service

FRANKFURT  (ANS) -- Sun and sand are any holidaymaker’s dream. The flip side is torture and persecution in some hot spots.

The International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) in Frankfurt, Germany, is calling for an informed and responsible tourism. Travelers could contribute to an improvement in the human rights situation by exposing violators like Cuba, China, Turkey and the Maldives islands.

As the human rights organization points out, tourism accounts for a large part of the financing of the repressive system in Cuba. The Communist regime welcomes especially sex tourists: “They pay well and are on the whole uncritical of the political system”.

The People’s Republic of China presents itself as a destination for cultural tourism and the venue of the Olympic Games in 2008. Tourists should be aware, however, that China is a world leader in torture and capital punishment, says ISHR. Hundreds of thousands are being persecuted for religious, ethnic and political reasons.

In Turkey, a favorite holiday area for Europeans, Christians are being discriminated and pushed aside, according to ISHR. The Christian percentage in the population has dropped in the last century from 20 percent to 0.3 percent. Travelers can support churches simply by asking hotel managers for the times and venue of worship services.

Tourists will be looking in vain for churches in the Maldives. All non-Muslims places of worship are prohibited on the “paradise islands” in the Indian Ocean. Freedom of conscience, speech and religion is radically suppressed by the one-party regime in the Maldives, says ISHR.

Al Qaeda 'threat to blow up ships'

Thursday, August 5, 2004 Posted: 8:27 AM EDT (1227 GMT)

The French supertanker Limburg was attacked off Yemen in 2002.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Intelligence shows al Qaeda has plans to blow up shipping in a bid to disrupt world trade, Britain's top Naval officer has said in an interview.

The Royal Navy's First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Sir Alan West, said that Western governments had intelligence that terrorists view shipping as an attractive target and have plans to destroy ships.

"We have got an underlying level of intelligence which shows there is a threat," West told Lloyd's List maritime newspaper.

West warned that terrorism could potentially cripple global trade and have grave knock-on effects on developed economies.

"What we've noticed is that al Qaeda and other organizations have an awareness about maritime trade," he said.

"They've realized how important it is for world trade in general and they understand that significance."

Lloyd's list commented that the terrorist threat to merchant shipping is nothing new for the maritime industry --illustrated in 2002 by the attack on the French tanker Limburg off the coast of Yemen.

But such a stark warning from such a senior figure in the British military establishment was likely to add further impetus to global efforts to increase security awareness at sea, Lloyds List said.

"We've seen other plans from intelligence of attacks on merchant shipping," West said.

"I can't give you detail on any of that, clearly, but we are aware that they have plans and they've looked at this."

The biggest risk is in ports and maritime choke points such as the Strait of Gibraltar and the Suez Canal, where ships concentrate in large numbers as they sail through narrow waterways, West said.

On the open sea, West maintained, it is "almost impossible" for terrorists to attack a ship.

He also highlighted the role that the Royal Navy and Coalition partners including the U.S. play in deterring maritime attacks.

He said that role could be benefiting the UK's Red Ensign group of registers, whose vessels automatically enjoy the protection of the British naval fleet.

"Ship owners realize that there are vulnerabilities and they realize how important the navy is to actually protect them," he said.

In the Strait of Gibraltar western merchant ships are regularly escorted by navy flotillas operating under the auspices of NATO's Operation Active Endeavour.

The escorts were begun after Moroccan authorities arrested an al Qaeda cell preparing to target ships in the strait.

Fighting maritime terrorism is forcing navies to adapt to new techniques, Lloyds list said. These focused on ensuring that warships can respond to a close-range contact with small, fast craft.

That means increasing upper-deck armament and adjusting weapon systems so that they can take on targets at closer range.

West was speaking during an interview on board the British frigate HMS Grafton, which is in Gibraltar to participate in events to mark the 300th anniversary of the Anglo-Dutch capture of the Rock from Spain.
