NEW YORK -- Yesterday, Goliath CBS News was delivered a smooth stone to the forehead by a FReeper.
A poster in the FreeRepublic.com conservative news forum mentioned something peculiar about two documents CBSs 60 Minutes claimed on September 8 were generated by now deceased Lieutenant Colonel Jerry B. Killian regarding an allegedly National Guard-evading George W. Bush in 1973.
Within minutes following the broadcast, FReeper "TankerKC" wrote this to FReeper "Howlin'":
WE NEED TO SEE THOSE MEMOS AGAIN!
{snip]
Since then, news of the potential forgery glitch spread like wildfire from blog to blog and into the mainstream press - especially that of CBS competitors ABC and NBC.

There are just too many obvious phony elements to them. PO Box 345657? Give me a break! You will be surprized by what I am going to reveal to you. PO Box 34567 is mentioned as the address of Bushes ANG unit, on a document provided by the militray records office, to the media, before January of this year.

The forger picked up the PO Box detail from an official document, and incorporated it into phony "letterhead."

Rather and CBS must be sacraficed, for their entire industry is at risk.....
They lack the guts to change. The power of precedent and status quo is too powerful.
Death is often a slow and painful process. The process is now underway and is inexorable. The MSM is domed to a pianful death.
There is no maricle drug to cure the disease.

They can use a Mac or PC and create documents hehehehehe.
Too bad theyre mostly too young to remember typewriters, and lack the military experience to at least format a document properly.

I sent this letter to Illinoisleader.com
Forged documents, it's the kerning, stupid
On the question of Bush's National Guard records being forged, I'll borrow a line from the '92 Clinton campaign, 'It's the kerning, stupid'. Kerning being the distance between each letter in a portion of text. On word processing programs all the letters are equally spaced so that the distance between them is the same. On older typewriters a capital 'W' takes up the same amount of space as a lower-case 'i'. It's simply not possible to space letters like these documents have on the typewriters that the military had in 1972. Forgetting the superscript 'th', the curly apostrophe, and the centering and justification issues, the spacing of the letters is so obviously not from 1972 that nothing else even matters. What is truly amazing is that the authenticity is still being discussed. Also, that whoever forged them was so dumb to think that no one would notice. I can even go into MS Word and change the kerning to look more like a document from 1972, which leads me to believe that the forger is not only dishonest and probably a Democratic Kerry supporter, but is also stupid and lazy for not seeing and fixing the obvious problems with his forged works. I am wondering how he found a job that pays enough to even buy a computer in the first place. "Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life," as said by Dean Wormer in the movie Animal House; well dishonest, lazy, and stupid is no way to go through life either. I hope I'm not making these comments about Dan Rather personally. Possibly the source for these documents needs to be found; CBS News needs to hope its not internal.
I'm so sick of the Democrats I could puke. And more Democratic logic from the past week that makes no sense at all.
1996, Bill Clinton, 5.6% Unemployment, best economy in history.
2004, George W. Bush, 5.4% Unemployment, horrible, W stands for 'wrong' economy
Hillary is outraged, which happens every time a Republican's name is brought up so logically would follow any statement that includes one.

And not only is Dan Ruther a masterful liar (and has been the shining-light mentor of a liar to thousands of socialist press managers just like him) - BUT HE GETS PAID OVER A MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR TO LIE ABOUT IT!
Morale of the story: The better liar you are in American media the more you get paid and the bigger show they give you.

I for one am not surprised that this happened because of the visceral abject loathing by the democratic operatives of anything military. It is the fatal flaw in the democratic party that is doing them in this season. It is why they have done all of the wrong things regarding the SBV's, While anyone who had spent any time in the military could see that those documents were a fraud (must be around 6,000,0000 members of the american public) they did not bother to check with two or three of them. No need to. Eveyone in the military is just dumb.

Jim. Could you contact the newspaper and get permission to post the entire article? I'm sure they'd give it to you.
This is awesome and needs to be archived here at FR for future use.

www.freerepublic.com | September 10, 2004 UN-believable!
This story has just become riveting.
Not to mention the fact that it has turned attention from Bush's NG record (boring, we've heard it for years)into a story about possible Dem dirty tricks surrounding forged documents.
This whole thing seems to be backfiring on the Dems and their cohorts in the liberal media...poetic justice.
It reminds of something I think David wrote about his enemies becoming "ensnared" in the very traps they set for him. Perfect.

Journalistic history was made here this week. I celebrate with all here for that victory. Warmest congrats to Howlin and all on the Live Threads. Bump!
I know I can count on my fellow FReepers to sound the horns and ring the alarm bells when the dragon stirs. I also know that I can count on my fellow FReepers to respond vigorously to those alarms. By God's grace, we shall, together, chop off the tail of that dragon for good and all!
Thank you, TEX.
Amen.
