NRO Finds Genuine Bush Document with Superscript "TH"
National Review ^ | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 09/10/2004 2:54:13 PM PDT by jaycost

There is a link to a PDF Document. You'll note that it is on the third page at the top. This must be what CBS is hinting at in its press release.

The differences between this document and the CBS forgeries are quantum.

If this is what CBS is going to hang its hat on, then they are *really* sunk. What is worse? Coming clean when you are caught, or making a lame excuse?

But CBS loses this as well. They talked to several folks before airing the 60 minutes and were told by his son and widow that that docs were laughable.

They talked to bush's trainer as well. Same answer. The son went as far as to talk about bush's 35-10 being spot on all of the time.

Yeah,but they don't care.

Their ratings are in the toilet, their candidate is losing, the new media is all over them.

We are witnessing the total meltdown of the so called "msm".

I love it.

Would the military use a common PO Box instead of the military post addy? These docs have a common Houston PO Box addy.

A NOTE ON THE 'TH' [09/10 05:30 PM]

On this PDF of a Bush document we can see an elevated, or "superscript", th in a reference 111th. However, nobody would dispute that this document was typed on a typewriter - the font is courier, the little 's' keys are blurred, etc. It doesn't look like the 'th' used in the CBS memo.

UPDATE: I know it's tough to find. It's on the third page, upper left hand corner, two lines down. The reference is to the "111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron."

This seems to be what the paragraph is referring to... my guess is to show how the superscripts at that time looked when they were typed:

One of the things about the manual typewriters with the rotating platen is that any character could be super- or subscripted by manually turning the platen a little.

Way back when my office had an IBM Selectric. I could make a superscript by moving the roller up half a click. I would then hold it in place with one hand and type with the other. It was not something anyone would do just for a personal memo - even for an MFR. The only time I did it was for personal letters.

It's not a genuine superscript. Note that the top of the 'th' is level with the top of the adjoining letter. This is clearly a special character on a key. The 'th' on the phony Bush memos extends above the top of the adjoining letter.

The 'second th document' does not feature kerning or proportional fonts or the bizarre address or the unusual abbreviations or the perfectly-centered heading or the sentiments contrary to the widow's recollection of her husband views or...

On its own, the 'second th document' is a very slender reed.

The th issue is a red herring.

Rather will attempt to cloud the issue with the superscripted th, but the 4's are the dead give-away. You will notice that 4's typed on a typewriter are open at the top. 4's produced on a word-processor are closed at the top. Compare the TANG records to the fake documents and you will see.

"Don't you find it a little odd that there's only one superscript "th" on that report...all the others are in regular type."

I don't. Even if a feature such as this were available, the odds of all personnel using the same typewriter, or even the same features on a typewriter are slim.

The date arrangements are passing odd to me on that doc. The first three date entries are what I'm used to seeing on military docs. (may, sep, nov) but they must have changed personnel with someone from Europe in December and June because the date format is reversed. 69DEC29? made me feel like I was driving in Great Briton again.

Besides the technical problems with the documents, Fox has been dissecting the content and structure of the things.

Yes, there's a lot more wrong than the superscript.

True. The funny thing is that the DNC is trying to blame this on Rove. This is very rich.

Wonder how the DU folks are taking all of this wonderful news. Kerry is sinking like a rock.

NRO must have found what I posted last night. Here's an update:

Since I posted the original article, I've learned a bit more. Take a look at the image below:

The first line is some stuff I pulled from the forged memo and the second line is taken from the official Bush document. Here's what I know now:

I'll repeat something I posted earlier:

The 'th' in the CBS documents that are not superscripted were typed with a space between the number and the 'th'. The reason to do this is because Word automatically turns the 'th' into a superscript.

In no other case would a typist actually put a space between the number and the 'th' when working on a typewriter.

The forger obviously missed a couple in the document, and that has now doomed him...or her.

The fact there are now 16 different discrepancies, and the family of the writer saying this is bogus, and the fact the only source Dan Rather could have gotten such a document is through his daughter, Robin, means it goes directly to the Texas Democratic Party, the 'Texans for Truth' who mysteriously organized right when these documents were being released, and MoveOn.org.

...And if this can be demonstrated, this will do to the entire democrat party what Watergate did to Nixon.

"The superscript in the official document appears to have an underlines superscript ( th ), which may have been available as a special key on some typewriters, but there is no confirmation of this yet. The forged document has no underline

Your right on this one.. Some typewriters had the "th" key. If you notice, it does not go above the letters next to it and is the same width as the letters next to it. again. nothing is proportional including the "TH".. in the Forged documents.. the TH is ABOVE the letters next to it (Including the Capitol "R" which was impossible with typewriters at the time and is why the experts have been saying it was not created with a typewriter.

Note that in this page (3) the lines were typed at different times, some clearly on different typewriters.

So, One TANG typewriter had a "th" key. It would still be incapable of generating the CBS docs.

The way to make a supercript on a typewriter is to roll the platen half way up and type the degree mark or the th or the st and then return the platen to the oriiginal position to finish the line. Of course this will not reduce the size of the type. And when you try to do it again, you have to be a crack typist to get it at the same level on the second try. I used to have an Olympia typewriter in the '50s that had half line spaces that allowed you to do this more neatly -- but you still couldn't change the size of the type.
