** Rush just played a clip of Dan Rather categorically saying the documents are not forgeries (he was interviewed on the street outside CBS headquarters). DAN IS GOING DOWN! HE IS STAKING HIS ENTIRE CREDIBILITY ON THIS ALREADY DISPROVEN STORY. **

Recall the attempted 1988 ambush by Rather on then VP George HW Bush live on the seeBS Evening News? GHWBush insisted on a live interview, and when the lead-in report was a big hatchet job on him regarding Iran Contra, GHWBush tore little Dannie a new one in a big time fashion. At the time, Bush had been portrayed as a light-weight, and this interview changed many opinions, much to Dannie's dismay.

CBS and the MSM characterized the whole thing as a trap that Bush had sprung on Rather. (Never mind that it was DR's own show, and he was in control of the whole thing, not the Vice President.) The incompetance of CBS News' operation collapsed and backfired on them, and they tried to blame George HW Bush.

Now today, the same CBS players tried to ambush George W. Bush, and their incompetance has caused it to blow up in their faces yet again. And yet again it appears they are going to try to falsely blame "evil Republicans" such as Karl Rove for their being duped.

Call it Dan-ja Vou.

Did Rather actually say the documents themselves were genuine? That's not what I heard. What I heard was that Rather was standing by his claim that the "story is true." But I may have missed something.

There's a huge difference, but you have to parse Rather's words in the way that Clinton parsed his own Lewinsky denials to spot it.

I do not doubt for a moment that Rather is convinced the underlying story is true. However, I believe he and his crew knew they were dealing with phonied-up documents, but that they rationalized going with the story by telling themselves, "But the underlying claim in the memos is true."

It would be akin to an unscrupulous conservative reporter publishing an obviously phony document purportedly written by a deceased officer who had commanded Kerry in Vietnam dated Christmas 1968 that said, "Went to mass with Lt(jg) John F. Kerry this AM. We spent the rest of the day in our hooch at An Loc drinking scotch, more than 50 miles from the Cambodian border."
