Robert Duvall Slams Steven Spielberg

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Actor Robert Duvall probably won't be making any movies for DreamWorks any time soon.

In a CBS "60 Minutes II" interview set for broadcast Wednesday, the Oscar-winning performer sharply criticized filmmaker and DreamWorks SKG studio co-founder Steven Spielberg for visiting Cuba in November 2002.

"Spielberg went down there recently and said, 'The best seven hours I ever spent was actually with Fidel Castro.' Now, what I want to ask him, ... 'Would you consider building a little annex on the Holocaust museum, or at least across the street, to honor the dead Cubans that Castro killed.' That's very presumptuous of him to go there," Duvall told Charlie Rose, according to excerpts of the interview released by CBS.

The actor, who won an Academy Award for his role in the 1983 film "Tender Mercies," added, "I'll never work at DreamWorks again, but I don't care about working there anyway."

Spielberg's spokesman, Marvin Levy, responded by issuing a statement saying the remark Duvall attributed to the director about his meeting with Castro is "totally false."

"He never said it, or anything like it," Levy said, adding Spielberg's trip to the Communist-ruled island had been authorized as a cultural exchange by the U.S. government.

Spielberg spent four days in Cuba, launching a showcase of eight of his movies, meeting with Cuban filmmakers and paying visits to Havana's largest synagogue and a memorial to Holocaust victims at the city's Jewish cemetery.

The Oscar-winning director of "Saving Private Ryan" and "Schindler's List" also dined with Fidel Castro, spending about eight hours with the Cuban leader discussing art, politics and history.

During his trip, Spielberg made headlines by calling for an end to the 40-year-old U.S. trade embargo against Cuba, saying it was time to bury old grudges from the Cold War and expand interactions between Americans and Cubans.

I just heard this on Laura's show as well, but Duvall made the comment way back in January.

bumpity.

Just wait. This'll become an "oooh, Duvall's an antisemite" opportunity. It could be an opportunity to notice that self-worshipful obsessing about the Holocaust detracts energy from preventing another one. Liberal Hollywood Jews are not helpful to keeping Israel alive.

I've never missed a Duvall film. I even love his commercials.

Spielberg claims he never said that, fwiw.

He's definitely a Castro fan though.

The "Great Santini" has spoken. That's why Duvall is my favorite actor. He actually played a Cuban in Miami in "Saving Ernest Hemingway" I swear you wouldn't have known it was Robert Duvall if you didn't look at the movie credits.

The Duvall/60 Minutes piece was actually a re-airing. It aired for the first time about 9 months ago, IIRC.

If it's on 60 Minutes how can anyone be sure he said it?

60 min is now under the same news category as the Enquirer, the globe and such gossip magazines. They sure took themselves down a few notches...

I personally have never seen the bias so transparent as with this election...

Sounds like old news, but I'll give it a bump anyway - Duvall is one of my favorites of all time.

I've never missed a Duvall film.

I bet you've seen "Open Range" then. I thought this was a great movie! And Duvall was superb. At first I had my doubts about the movie because I usually find Costner's acting annoying. But he wasn't that bad. Come to find out, Kevin got struck with a case of appendicitis during the shooting which tempered his acting style.

Over all I found the movie reminiscent of earlier westerns. No grey area between who the good guys or the bad guys were. It was very enjoyable and I'll probably rent it again someday.

I agree, in their rush to carry water for the Kerry campaign they gave up any pretense at objective journalism.

Cuban Communists good, Arab Communists bad. In other words, the flip side of Pat Buchanan.

Still expecting Dershowitz to endorse Kerry.

I remember that comment that Duvall made toward Spielberg happened several months ago. I also remember Spielberg denying that he said that. At first I believed Spielberg because Cuba is such a propaganda machine, but then, I wondered why didn't Spielberg make his denial when those comments attributed to him first came out? Why did he let himself be used as a piece of propaganda to pump up Castro?

Unfortunately for Cubans Castro is a fashionable dictator for most in the Hollywood left. It's okay to be a brutal dictator so long as your fashionable.
