CBS/AP) Questions are being raised about the authenticity of newly unearthed memos that say President Bush's National Guard commander believed Mr. Bush was shirking his duties.
The memos, which were obtained by CBS News' 60 Minutes, say Mr. Bush ignored a direct order from a superior officer and lost his status as a Guard pilot because he failed to meet military performance standards and undergo a required physical exam.
The network defended the autheniticity of the memos, saying its experts who examined the memos concluded they were authentic documents produced by Lt. Col. Jerry Killian.
But Killian's son, one of Killian's fellow officers and an independent document examiner questioned the memos.

There really is no 'questions' about it. They are fakes printed from a computer. Variable letter spacing with perfect center justification. That was not happening on any typewiter.
The journalists will now dig hard to find "who did it" - who made the forgeries. Remember, we all hate negative campaigning.
Oh how they'll pursue the culprits relentless until they find who was involved, even if it leads straight to the Kerry campaign itself!
OK--CBS may not want to revela the source fo the docments but they certainly can be aske dto identy the experts woho would stand by the authenticity assertion. I suspect no "expert" would do so in fact because it would trash his or her professional expertise completely.
Amount of expertise saying these are fakes is significant.
So--CBS--what experts--(name, names) will stake their reputations on asserting the authenticity of these documents???
FYI, the American Spectator website, with the "Anantomy of a Forgery" has crashed, most likely because so many people are trying to access it from Drudge. This story is growing legs.
DAN CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH
Dan Rather is the undisputed head pooh-bah of the news division at CBS. Rather has spent 40 years solidifying his position. His former colleague Bernard Goldberg reports that Mr. Rather is extremely sensitive to criticism from any source. In his book "Bias," Mr. Goldberg quotes CBS News President Andrew Haywood: "Dan can't distinguish between mainstream criticism and criticism coming from the extremists. It's all the same to him." Goldberg writes that in the 1980s there was a vice president at CBS whose unofficial title was "vice president in charge of Dan Rather. "His main job was keeping Dan Rather happy." Little wonder, then, that CBS News refuses to acknowledge the liberal bias that is a staple of CBS News. No one can get through to Dan Rather. He is impervious to criticism.

Hey dinosaurs, the meteor has hit.
They don't call it SeeBS for nothing.
The White House distributed the four memos from 1972 and 1973 after obtaining them from CBS News. The White House did not question their accuracy.
The White House should produce some experts to prove the documents are fakes. The Bush campaign need to be more agressive.
If it looks like dog poop and smells like dog poop, call it Channel No.5, but.....it's still POOP.
No typewriter in 1973 did superscripts like that.
Keep in mind that this is from the CBS Newswebsite. Note how everything is now "60 Minutes" did this and "60 Minutes" did that.
The White House distributed the four memos from 1972 and 1973 after obtaining them from CBS News. The White House did not question their accuracy.
Here we go!! CBS is implying one of two things. 1) That the White House was not contesting the contents and verifying their authenticity or 2) The White House secretly new that the documents were forged but didn't tell CBS.
CBS must be in panic mode.

From one CBS article I got the feeling that the "expert" who vetted the docs was a "friend" of the late Col Killian, probably also a Kerry supporter, who said the docs look like something Killian would have written. Probably. Yeah, I'd say so. He probably wrote that.
By attempting to smear the President, the democrats have called every member of the Guard, Reserve from 1960-1975, and every contemporary of Kerry that didn't serve in the military in Vietnam as cowards. Also everybody that received a deferment from the draft during that period is a draft dodger. I hope they remember in November.
As another Freeper stated on another thread: The way CBS will climb down from their postition will be to assert that the Whitehouse has not claimed that these documents are not authentic. This way they leave the door open a crack as to the possibility that the underlying story might be true......which is all they really care about.
It also strikes me that CBS has only admitted to a "handwriting analysis" as proof of authenticity. Shoot, with modern cut 'n paste you can't hang your hat on that unless you have the original documents....and they don't appear to have the originals, only copies.
I can't wait to see the letter signed by my congresscritter rebuking CBS for their partisan reporting......I suppose I'll turn blue while I hold my breath. They are still to tired from signing the letter to Fox!
Conyers, where ya at?
You know, I haven't heard/seen anyone comment on the "CYA" subject line at the top of the memo. Seems to me that should have been a clue; almost as if someone engaged in some wishful thinking and mocked up a document just for grins, and then thought "hey, maybe they'll actually buy it."
Also, it was fun watching Dem strategist Bob Beckel on Fox this morning, obviously containing a huge amount of disappointment and frustration that he couldn't spend his appearance touting the docs as proof that Bush is a bum; instead having to settle for spinning away from them with "It's too bad this is going to distract from the real issues for another week."
