Well, no disrespect to Shelby Foote, but he and I have a disagreement with his portrayal of Jackson's ability during the Seven Days. Too many writers, with a hindsight that is perfect, determine who did what...

At the end of the Seven Days, Lee took a fractured army with many independent leaders and made it a great army. And if Jackson was the screw-up that Foote and others portray him to be, then why was it that Jackson along with Longstreet became his most loyal lieutenents...and why is it that Jackson became Lee's go-to guy.

James Robinson's Jackson biography also suggests that Jackson underperformed during the Seven Days Battles, especially by not linking up with and supporting A.P. Hill near Beaver Dam Creek on the first night. Robinson also suggests that Jackson was simply exhausted and details his recent stress/lack of sleep.
