Guard Memos Fuel Another Vietnam-Era Battle; ... some question the documents' authenticity

Guard Memos Fuel Another Vietnam-Era Battle

CBS defends letters that seem to impugn Bush's service as some question the documents' authenticity. Partisans on both sides engage.

By James Rainey And Mark Z. Barabak, Times Staff Writers

A day after reports that President Bush received preferential treatment during his time in the Texas Air National Guard, the controversy raged on in the presidential race Thursday as Bush's critics suggested he lied about his Vietnam-era record and defenders accused Democrats of fueling baseless attacks.

As both sides fought over the nature of Bush's military service more than 30 years ago, experts raised questions about the authenticity of documents that a day earlier had cast a shadow over Bush's performance as a pilot and first lieutenant in the Texas Guard.

Forensic authorities said that critical memos that CBS News said were written by Bush's squadron commander in the early 1970s might not be legitimate — the product of a modern-day word processor and not a Vietnam-era typewriter that Bush's commander would have used.

They're still "burying the lead" in these stories.

It's about Forgery

Crow, I suppose is difficult to digest.

Of course, if you read the entire article, you see that the Times basically mixes up the forgery issue with a bunch of other nonsense.

The fact that Kerry/CBS put out forged documents should merit its own separate headline.

The only reason the newspapers are really reporting this is that it gives them an opportunity to shame TV news and SeeBS...they don't give a rats' fanny about the truth of the matter - they'll even say things that might hurt their Johns' election chances if they can shame the electronic newzies.

Isn't it nice that the LA TImes writes "some question document's authenticity" .....hmmm would that "some" be the LA TIme's OWN experts!

Senior Kerry advisor Joe Lockhart, meanwhile, mocked claims that the case against the president had been concocted with forged documents.

So, so far we have "hooked" Terry McAuliffe, Tom Harkin, and Joe Lockhart to these memos are being authentic.

Any other takers before the Titanic sails?

When they planned this smear, they probably thought it was the perfect crime since Killian was dead, and would be unable to respond. They did not count on Killian's son or widow to say anything, not to mention their fellow travelers in the MSM.

this is NOT going to die any time soon.

Nope, and when the dust finally settles, the Kerry campaign and all the Bush-haters will be UTTERLY DISCREDITED.

He'd better talk to Chris Lehane. Lehane's pretty much conceding that they're fake, and the creation of Karl Rove!

No .. they didn't count on the public being smart enough to figure out the truth

If it hadn't been for Freepers, Powerline and a few others .. no one would have talked to Killian's widow and son

Burying the Lead?

Heck, CBS is (at 3:00 AM CST) is still running the same old story like it's TRUE.

Right now, they know it's got a problem, they should at least pull it.

The CBS Up To the Minute program (overnight news) is still carrying it in all it's glory.

I want to know who got John Kerry into the Naval Reserve.

And I want to know if he was still in the Reserve when he was working against the military as a leader of the Veterans Against the War when he got home. When did he get his discharge?
