Washington, DC, Sep. 9 (UPI) -- The Cybercast News Service reported Thursday documents casting doubt on the U.S. president's national guard service might be fakes.
CNS, an Internet-based news organization affiliated with a conservative media watchdog group, said the 32-year-old documents used by CBS to cast "a negative light on President Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard, may have been forged using a current word processing program."
The news organization said three independent typography tests indicated "they were suspicious of the documents" because they used a modern Microsoft Word font feature that was not available in 1972 or 1973.
The documents were featured Wednesday on "60 Minutes II" and allegedly came from the personal files of former Bush squadron Cmdr. Jerry B. Killian, now dead.
CBS will not say how it obtained them. John Collins, the chief technology officer of Bitstream, Inc., cited the use of a superscript "th" in one document as a reason to be suspicious. "That would not be possible on a typewriter or even a word processor at that time," Collins said. "It is a very surprising thing to see a letter with that date (May 4, 1972) on it.
There's no question that that is surprising. Does that force you to conclude that it's a fake? No. But it certainly raises the eyebrows."

Note that the memo above refers to an address at 5000 Longmont but according to payroll records, Bush lived 2910 Westheimer Rd Apt 4. If they knew where to send his check, why didn't they know where he lived ?
rrgg is I don't seem to be very clear, thanks to those who seem to understand, i apologize for my lack of clarity.
Proportional IBM typewriters maybe existed (quite honestly I don't know what they are) BUT getting an IBM Selectric or Executive were almost impossible unless you worked for a general officer. The first one I got took a lot of prayer and paperwork - you had to write a sole source justification that had better hold water if you even through procurement would approve one. Also, while working at Ramstein AB in Germany I was one of the first secretaries on base to receive a word processor - it was a Xerox and was the size of a desk.....ahhh, the good ole days! my guess? a lowly ANG unit in Houston TX would not have an IBM Selectric or Exectutive....not very scientific but that's my opinion on all of this....
This is the kind of story where FR is at it's best.
BumP
Yes, I did, and I did it on my Macintosh g5 running Microsoft word 2004 for Macintosh.
It's identical..

1-- proportional spacing not generally available
2 -- superscripts not generally available
3 - small "th" single element not generally available
4 - Smart quotes. Curved apostrophes and quotation marks were not available
5-The blurriness of the copy indicates it was recopied dozens of times, tactic of forgers
6--Signature block. Typical authentic military signature block has name, then rank, then on the next line the person's position. This just has rank beneath the name.
7--Margins. These look like a computer's unjustified default, not the way a person typing would have done it.
8 -- Date usually with three letters, or in form as 110471.
9 - words run over consistent with word processor
10 - may be a Times Roman or similar font not generally available then (per Haas Atlas)
11 - signature looks faked
12 - no errors and whiteout
13 - no letterhead
14 - exact match for Microsoft Word Processor
15 - Paper size problem, Air Force and Guard did not use 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper until the 1980s.
16 - Overlap analysis is an exact match
17 - absence of hyphens to split words between lines, c/w 1970's typewriter.
18 - 5000 Longmont #8 in Houston Tx. does not exist
19 - Box 34567 is suspicious, at best. The current use of the po box 34567 is Ashland Chemical Company, A Division of Ashland Oil, Incorporated P. O. Box 34567 Houston
20 - it would have been nearly impossible to center a letterhead with proportional spacing without a computer.
21 - Bush's grade would "normally" be abbreviated "1Lt" not "1st Lt"
22 - Subject matter bizarre
23 - Air Force did not use street addresses for their offices, rather HQ AFLC/CC, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH 45433.
24 - kerning was not available
25 - In the August 18, 1973 memo, Jerry Killian purportedly writes: "Staudt has obviously pressured Hodges more about Bush. I'm having trouble running interference and doing my job." but General Staudt, who thought very highly of Lt. Bush, retired in 1972.
26 - Language not generally used by military
27 - Not signed or initialed
28 - Not in any format that a military person would use, e.g. orders not given by Memo.
good comparison pic, Thanks!

i give up....I want authentic to word...not forged to word
IMHO, the person in charge of CBS needs to come clean and say how these documents were obtained and where they came from, else, he/she needs to view the bars from the inside! Surely, publishing fraudulent reports about our CIC, especially during a time of war, is not trumped by 'freedom of the press?' Seems to me that CBS's reports on these memos are the equivalent of 'shouting FIRE!!!, in a crouded theater??????

Note go to the above website of Bush ANG records - examine the signature block and actual signature of Lt. Col Killian - note how on the Bush records he signs using his full first name, plus, as required adds TX ANG after his rank
Compare these with the signatures and signature block on the CBS documents - not even close!!
I beg to differ. The Clintons are Machiavellian enough to pull a stunt like this. Notice that not even a week after the Carvile-Forehead gang takes over, you get this fiasco in the Ketchup Boy campaign. I honestly believe that if you dig deep enough, you would find, much to your and even their surprise, that the Toons are financing the Swiftie ads.
Numbers 32:33 And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, according to the cities thereof with their borders, even the cities of the land round about.
Is it true what Colmes just said, that the truly damaging ones are authentic? He seemed quite certain but then he always does.
See above.
ROFLMAOPLOOMN !!!!
That is a short, to the point, well stated answer to the question - Why are the main stream media types in a melt down mode?
I have to admit. This is pretty damning stuff. Any one that sees this will vote for Kerry now.
