General Staudt was retired!
Powerline ^ | Sept 9 2004 | Big Trunk

UPDATE 12: In the August 18, 1973 memo "discovered" by 60 Minutes, Jerry Killian purportedly writes:

Staudt has obviously pressured Hodges more about Bush. I'm having trouble running interference and doing my job. But wait! Reader Amar Sarwal points out that General Staudt, who thought very highly of Lt. Bush, retired in 1972.

The more I look at these "memos," the more obvious it appears that they are inept forgeries.

don't hold your breath.

They did their job, they reported it as fact knowing that it's all a lie.
They think the damage is done.
WE are here, unlike years ago, they will not get away with it.
The Truth will prevail!

If they do retract, it will be done saturday at 6am.

Rob, these jerks do not care that they are damaging the President, so I think that part should be left out.

Something that would be more convincing, base your complaint on CBS' loss of credibility. You might even mention that CBS used to be the most respected news source in the country and that incidents of this nature are why so many people have lost confidence in their reporting. You could also tell them their blatant commiseration with Democrats is the reason FOX is so popular.

I think they'll get the point.

'Zackly. Email didn't get developed until '71 so it'd be doubtfull some backwater had it in '72. Nevertheless, I don't think it ended up actually being germaine to the story as it was part of that spoof article.

Thanks for the reply!

I am at a complete loss for words. Complete.

Same here.

Question: How much ass do FReepers have to kick until we are taken seriously by the MSM? LOL.

The big question in my mind: how did Karl Rove manage to induce CBS and Dan Rather to fall for an easily-debunked set of memos, throw their common sense out the window and not get them checked, and then telecast the whole thing to their eternal embarrassment? The man is the devil himself ...

I'm sure the info is out there about the availability of email to the military (when and where), but the probability is low. The possibility is there... As you said, too much other evidence to the fraudulence of these articles, however.

I have yet to see any credit given to FR. Has anyone seen any links or mention of FR?

You nearly had me with that one. I was about to hit reply and sputter that there was no email in 1972... then I got it. I'm a little slow sometimes.

Sweet! I just got back from Winter Haven, Florida. I've been working all day (14 hrs). I work for an Electric Utility company so I haven't been able to properly inform myself over the last few weeks.

I'm going to FR Withdrawls.

"If the General retirement date is correct, then drip drip drip, Kerry was stabbed right in the back and it is fatal."

According to this LA Times article it looks, General Staudt DID retire in 1972!

The relevant quote is about 20 paragraphs down. I post it here:

Bush's application, as well as his commission, were handled by then-Col. Walter B. "Buck" Staudt, who said, "Nobody did anything for him…. There was no … influence on his behalf. Neither his daddy nor anybody else got him into the Guard." Staudt, who retired in 1972 as a brigadier general, said Bush was enrolled quickly because there was a demand for pilot candidates.

"You'd have thought the "dubya@yahoo.com" address would have tipped them off."

You're on the right track; email as such didn't exist in 1972; they were still using teletype format, and modems were headset cradles that ran at 90 baud.
