UPDATE 12: In the August 18, 1973 memo "discovered" by 60 Minutes, Jerry Killian purportedly writes:
Staudt has obviously pressured Hodges more about Bush. I'm having trouble running interference and doing my job. But wait! Reader Amar Sarwal points out that General Staudt, who thought very highly of Lt. Bush, retired in 1972.
The more I look at these "memos," the more obvious it appears that they are inept forgeries.

Oh man, yes, let's check Clinton's office.
John
Thanks for the ping..I was also writing CBS this morning.
The news only gets better and better and....what is really great is we are having fun and THEY are not!
don't hold your breath.
They did their job, they reported it as fact knowing that it's all a lie.
They think the damage is done.
WE are here, unlike years ago, they will not get away with it.
The Truth will prevail!
If they do retract, it will be done saturday at 6am.
'Zackly. Email didn't get developed until '71 so it'd be doubtfull some backwater had it in '72. Nevertheless, I don't think it ended up actually being germaine to the story as it was part of that spoof article.
Thanks for the reply!
Same here.
Question: How much ass do FReepers have to kick until we are taken seriously by the MSM? LOL.
bump
The big question in my mind: how did Karl Rove manage to induce CBS and Dan Rather to fall for an easily-debunked set of memos, throw their common sense out the window and not get them checked, and then telecast the whole thing to their eternal embarrassment? The man is the devil himself ...
Thank you!
Well, this forum sure moved THIS story in record time.
Yes...I see. It's Bush's fault! LOL.
I'm sure the info is out there about the availability of email to the military (when and where), but the probability is low. The possibility is there... As you said, too much other evidence to the fraudulence of these articles, however.
I have yet to see any credit given to FR. Has anyone seen any links or mention of FR?
Sean, Hewitt, and I think Rush.
LOL, I enjoyed reading the newly found document. Thanks for the laugh!
You nearly had me with that one. I was about to hit reply and sputter that there was no email in 1972... then I got it. I'm a little slow sometimes.
Sweet! I just got back from Winter Haven, Florida. I've been working all day (14 hrs). I work for an Electric Utility company so I haven't been able to properly inform myself over the last few weeks.
I'm going to FR Withdrawls.
According to this LA Times article it looks, General Staudt DID retire in 1972!
The relevant quote is about 20 paragraphs down. I post it here:
Bush's application, as well as his commission, were handled by then-Col. Walter B. "Buck" Staudt, who said, "Nobody did anything for him . There was no influence on his behalf. Neither his daddy nor anybody else got him into the Guard." Staudt, who retired in 1972 as a brigadier general, said Bush was enrolled quickly because there was a demand for pilot candidates.
Stay Strong,

You're on the right track; email as such didn't exist in 1972; they were still using teletype format, and modems were headset cradles that ran at 90 baud.
