I haven't noticed that many LTC ever typed their own letters or memos.
Doesn't this make my suggestion (#32, 35 above) more plausible? He handwrote them, and then got worried that someone writing a book about him might not be able to read his handwriting, so he (or his wife or personal assistant) types them up, signs them, and files them away.
Nope in the Navy a Commander would have had his Yeoman or LT do the job. Not sure the MOS in the army - but would have likely been a private/corporeal.

My LTC typed all my official documentation cover letters/memos when I was an A1C.
For a few years,at HQ level, I thought LTCs were specially appointed due to their extraordinary typing skills.
