Russia Accuses Britain of Weakening Anti-Terror Fight/Double Standard
The Scotsman ^

Posted on 09/09/2004 7:12:21 AM PDT by politicalvanguard.com

Russia’s foreign minister pointed an accusing finger at Britain today for exercising double standards by granting asylum to Chechen separatists.

Sergey Lavrov said the moves weaken global anti-terror efforts.

His comments, in a Moscow newspaper interview, reflected long-time Russian anger over what Moscow sees as the West’s receptiveness to Chechen militants accused of a string of recent terrorist attacks.

The Kremlin instead contends that the militants are trained and supported by international terrorist groups, like al-Qaida.

“Granting asylum to people involved in terrorism – and Russia has documented evidence of this – not only causes us regret but also effectively undermines the unity of the anti-terrorist coalition,” Lavrov said.

Russian officials have been particularly angered by Britain’s granting of asylum to Akhmed Zakayev, an envoy for Chechen rebel leader Aslan Maskhadov, and the US granting of asylum to Ilyas Akhmadov, who was foreign minister under Maskhadov during Chechnya’s de-facto independence in the late 1990s.

“It is enough to recall Akhmed Zakayev’s statement made from London, in which he plainly and bluntly and without any intricacies blamed what happened in Beslan on the Russian leadership. I believe the cynicism of this statement is clear to everybody,” Lavrov said.

“We are far from accusing the leaders of major countries ... of deliberately preserving this double standard,” he said. “But the inertia is still very strong.”

The attacks – the downing of two airliners apparently by explosions, a suicide bombing outside a Moscow underground station and last week’s school siege – prompted officials to offer £6 million for information leading to the killing or capture of top Chechen rebel leaders and a pledge to go after terrorists all over the world.

Russia consistently brushes off criticism that its policies in Chechnya and the brutality of its troops there feed resentment that boosts support for rebels waging a five-year insurgency.

Never mind, Russia. Those who granted asylum to these scum will understand, sooner or later, what they have done.

Just as some of us understand that the "Russian government" was in bed with Saddam making $$$$$ off that crooked UN "Oil for rotten Food" program all the liberals of the world set up, while he was slaughtering his own people.

Russian officials appear distraught, despairing to me, rather than resolute or even enraged. I've been scratching my head over their behavior since the Beslan atrocity.

I was saying to DH--"You never know how a Russian will react, their thinking is foreign to my mind."

Do they want to join with the US in fighting terror, or are they looking for a scapegoat with the US? Whatever silliness is in talking to Chechyns, no one can seriously believe that would cause what happened in Beslen. And it annoys enough to make anew the points about--"What's all this nuclear pussyfooting with terrorist Iran, Putin? Imagine the Muslim Chechyns with NUKES?!"

It's a power plant. Can this be turned into a nuclear weapon? Probably only if someone crashes into it.

The Russkis have got it right. Terrorists (whoops, I mean asylum seekers) get treated like royalty here.

>It's a power plant. Can this be turned into a nuclear weapon? Probably only if someone crashes into it

"...David Albright, head of the Institute for Science and International Security in Washington and a former weapons inspector in Iraq, told the AP Tuesday that Bushehr can be used to produce weapon-grade plutonium.

"Plutonium with a high fraction of plutonium 240, commonly called reactor-grade plutonium, can be used to make a crude nuclear explosive. Moreover, Bushehr could be used to produce weapon-grade plutonium directly," Albright said.

"He said a uranium enrichment plant under construction at Natanz, in central Iran, was a gas centrifuge plant that can make either low enriched or highly enriched uranium; the latter is used in a nuclear weapon. IAEA inspectors visited Natanz last month."

And with good reason. Their military is mostly conscripts and mercenaries, and the chechens have won almost every major "battle" on the public front. They're only 13 years out from trying to rebuild an entire country and have been attacked four times in about a week. Meanwhile the rest of the world is condemning them, and the US and Britain are granting asylum to former chechen rebels.

My prayers are with Putin and Russia. Only Israel has truly shown Putin support with no criticism.

Or removes some rather radioactive material, starting with plutonium (the "other" nuclear weapons fuel) and continuiong through a whitches' brew of high-order waste (think "dirty bomb").

Just what hell does your stupid unfounded remark have to do with Britain harboring terrorists?

I see no sense in whining about this action of Russia's and in the same breath granting asylum to a former chechen terrorist.

I see the second action as far more harmful to my country and my children, in fact. This man we just gave free medical care and a job to will certainly turn on us bigtime in our lifetimes.

Thanks for the explanation.

So does Arafat. It's not fun to watch, but at least we've got their addresses. It's an affront, perhaps insulting, but not a cause of terrorism. Putin had better focus on the harder job than gripe about slights.

And if Israel is concerned about Iran's power plants and nukes enough to threaten Iran with attack, that's a good enough indication to me that Putin should not supply Iran with anything nuclear.

And do not forget Georgia, a state Russia concidered friendly to terrorists, which just happens to have US troops protecting it, and let's not forget the Saundi, that fund terrorist globally and which also has US forces protecting it, etc, etc, etc.

I would think that the Russian might resonably conclude that the USA is the main enemy in it's WOT.

We are approaching the point where PCness is going to get us all killed, we need to define exactly who the enemy is, the hell with being PC, ID the enemy (Radical Islam) and kill him.

"I would think that the Russian might resonably conclude that the USA is the main enemy in it's WOT."

Interesting comment as one considers who it has been selling "nuclear" to these (radicals) over the past 10 years. I will agree that it is the US that Russia is after and there is nothing new under the sun.

Yes it was the "COMMIE" mind and method of operation that planted deep those roots of PCism.

Both the USA and Russia have dirty hands, I am hoping all this finger pointing is just blowing off steam and that the US and Russia can in fact work together, we get a free hand in the middle east Russia get a free hand in far east. We curb our Saundi dog, Russia does the same with Iran.

But could be that Russia will decide to attack US interest in US client states like Georgia, then things get very complicated.
