State Revenue Department says state's economy going strong

Associated Press

MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin's economy is going strong this year, with a dramatic increase in employment, the state Department of Revenue says.

The agency said in its Wisconsin Economic Outlook released Tuesday said that, after two flat years from the fourth quarter of 2001 to the fourth quarter of 2003, the state's job picture is finally improving.

The 2.82 million people in the state with jobs during the second quarter of this year were 42,500 more on average than six months earlier, the report said.

After 17 quarters of declines, the state had an increase of 1,300 factory jobs during the first quarter and 7,700 in the second quarter, the department said.

The report said manufacturing gains of 0.8 percent are anticipated this year, 2.4 percent in 2005, 1.7 percent in 2006 and 1.2 percent in 2007.

Total nonfarm employment in Wisconsin is now expected to grow 1.4 percent this year and 1.8 percent in 2005. Professional and business services, as well as educational and health services, will be the fastest growing sectors, the report said.

It projects personal income growth of 5.9 percent for the state this year and 5.0 percent in 2005.

James Buchen, vice president of government relations for Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, a trade group for manufacturing companies, said the predictions are probably realistic.

"We've been getting a sense that the manufacturing sector was stronger than the employment figures suggested for some time," Buchen said. "It's good news, certainly, for the economy."

Mining machinery is picking up, Buchen said, with the recent rise in metal prices. But he said the paper industry continues to struggle.

I heard some journalist in WI tell Greta last night on her show that Kerry should campaign on the doom and gloom in WI. I kept thinking to myself that the state is actually one of the leaders on the economy right now, so that seemed unreal.

HALLELUJAH!!! I thing The Prez is going to carry WI this time around. He just barely lost it last time. ALSO, with Michigan having the referendum on same sex marriage on the November 2 ballot, the conservatives will come out in droves. I predict The Prez will carry MI as well.

Oh happy day......

So, how does Craps Doyle spin this as he campaigns around the state for sKerry? Doyle has been maintaining that his own policies are responsible for the upturn, acknowledging that it exists. But Bush is responsible for our lousy economy. Hmmmm....
