Terrorism only became such a potent weapon because the West allowed it to happen
Jewish World Review ^ | 9-8-04 | Melanie Phillips

Russia's weakness carries a dire warning for us, too. For the west is also weak, in its ignorance, prejudice and gullibility

Suddenly, a far-away country about which most of us know little has shot to the very forefront of our minds and consciences. In a new century already steeped in horror, what happened at the Russian school in Beslan plumbs new depths of barbarity.

The carefully planned slaughter of hundreds of children, a massacre of innocents mown down inside their school by zealots who bayoneted one when he asked for water and who blew others up or shot them in cold blood, is a monstrosity which has had a profound effect upon those who watched in horror as the tragedy unfolded.

The hellish images — of murder, of screaming terror, of naked and starving children forced to eat the flowers they had brought to school or drink their own urine — will surely serve to define our terrorized age. It is impossible to comprehend how human beings can behave like this to anyone, let alone to children.

And that incomprehension makes us realize that we are dealing here with something that is as terrifying as it is diabolical —people who no longer behave as recognizable human beings, who are in the grip of a religious hysteria so profound that human life is of no consequence whatsoever, except as a means to terrorize the world.

Mmmm...

So: How did terrorism become such a potent weapon in Israel ?

I've never seen any suggestion the Israelis "allowed it".

I wonder if the Israelis may have ended the problem long ago, if not for the fact that the West, particularly the US, has consistently pressured them to back off and work with the Arabs and terrorists.

Of course, our motivation for that could probably be based on the trading relationship we have with Arab nations. In fact, I also doubt that Islamic terror would be a problem, except for the fact that the West makes that part of the world wealthy through oil purchases. Otherwise, the Middle East might just be a backwater, of interest mainly to tourists and archaeologists.

Yeah, that's the ticket! Israel allowed itself to be attacked. The U.S. allowed itself to be attacked. Russia allowed itself to be attacked.

How stupid!!!!!

One doesn't asked to be attacked. We try to protect oneselves. Sometimes the protection is enough; sometimes not, and we have to step-up our defenses.

But sooner or later, we have to stop being on the defense and take the offense to rid the planet of this scum.

Who is the scum? Why is there resistance to laying the blame where it belongs? On the Islamic Terrorist Killers!!!!

But there isn't a Country of these low-lifes. These murdering types are imbedded countries which allow the Islamic religion (of peace?) to breed this radical, death-to-all mentality.

We've got to start (practice?) in this country on how to weed out this mentality -- before we have any idea about how to wipe it out on the planet. Any ideas?

They haven't.

But Yasser Arafat has always been able to bend many friendly ears in the UN and the rest of the West.

The West has historically failed to make a united front against terror and allowed Israel's terrorist assailants to become "freedom fighters", "militants" or "insurgents" in the Western press.

"In a new century already steeped in horror, what happened at the Russian school in Beslan plumbs new depths of barbarity."

Nice hyperbole---unfortunately not true. This kind of barbarity is a VERY OLD story in historical context. It only "plumbs new depths of barbarity" in the purview of late 20th Century/early 21st Century western countries. See Cambodia, Sudan, and a host of other countries for things as bad or worse in VERY recent memory.

So many still refuse to "Get It"!??

I don't think it's because they can't get it but because they have made a conscience decision to pretend not to "Get It". They won't because it is easier to ignore it, easier to do nothing. They know the truth, they know what they personally have to do, know what they might have to sacrifice and they made a very informed choice to look the other way. They Get IT! And they have said "I don't give a hoot about anybody but me!! They know darn well what the face of evil looks like and they are cowards who would rather be killed by it then go to battle.

I think those of us who know better and are acting would do better if we stop referring to the cowards as those who "Still don't get it"!! I'm so sick of this phrase, I feel like I am enabling them to live in their cowardliness by playing their game of "They don't get it!" Like Hell they don't get it!!

JWR contributor Melanie Phillips is a British journalist and author. She is best known for her controversial column about political and social issues which currently appears in the Daily Mail. Awarded the Orwell Prize for journalism in 1996, she is the author of All Must Have Prizes, an acclaimed study of Britain’s educational and moral crisis, which provoked the fury of educationists and the delight and relief of parents. Her ideas have influenced politicians in both government and opposition, who follow her battles in the culture wars with fascination. Styled a conservative by her opponents, she prefers to think of herself as defending authentic liberal values against the attempt to destroy western culture from within.

Clearly. Jewish World Review is well known as a far left rag, as are their columnists.

Thank you for reminding us.

Good luck in third grade.

Because it was effective. The "blame the victim" mentality which the author is addressing has it's source in the world's view of Israel's longstanding battle against terrorism. Israel hasn't had the flexibility to confront terror at it's roots that the US and Russia have.

The Isrealies are very effective fighting terrorism when they are properly motivated, but have become immune to the violence and carnage due to daily immersion in it.

They have just as much flexibility to take out the thorn of Palestinian thugs as we do. Why they stop doing the right thing and let Arrafat and Hamas continue to exist is stupid. Do they actually thing they will repent and stop killing innocent people in the name of their god?

Just kill them all and the world will be a better place.

...are you just stirring the pot today?

We (the West) must ask ourselves ... Can we truly call ourselves civilised? Do we even know what the word means? What is civilised about being so weak and disinterested in the safety of our children and citizens that we allow barbaric human swine to murder almost at will?

Terrorism did not work against the Romans or Peter The Great or Gengis Kahn. It was instantly stamped out if ere it raised it's head.

Order is the first prerequisite of civilization. When order collapses all else gives way. If we lose the foundation stone of civilization then all the other great aspects of society will fall. This of course is the goal of the Terrorist.

We must reorder our priorities. We are afraid that if we stamp out the cause of our horror it will render us equal with our enemies. This is a stupid idea. Either we stamp them out or we will die. Horribly. Or perhaps we have lost the right to go on living. Could it be that the rot has progressed so far that healing is no longer possible? We've gotten our limb enmeshed in the gears. Either we amputate or we bleed to death.

You've nailed it! Political correctness is getting people killed, even as we speak.

I hope I'm wrong, but I see "Stupid Muslim Death Tricks" (SMDT - Dave Letterman lingo for terrorism) happening in this country precisely BECAUSE of liberal-driven political correctness. The question which comes to mind is what can/should those of us who have not allowed political correctness to replace our common sense supposed to do about it?

With all due apologies to the American Indian, perhaps a "game" of cowboys and muslims is in order. Since all muslims not actively involved in SMDT are notably silent on the issue, and since silence connotes acquiescence, acquiescence connotes complicity, complicity = support, is there any such thing as an "innocent" muslim? Where are all these "moderate" muslims who supposedly exist, and why are they not coming out against terrorism?

There are millions of muslims in the US - certainly a target-rich environment if it ever comes to that. I hope not, but how many of us are going to have to die due to political correctness before something is done to eradicate the threat (like was done to smallpox)?!

Is there an alternative to anarchy ("cowboys and muslims") in this matter? I sure hope so!
