Copies of Kerry book hard to find -
Hampton Roads Daily Press, VA ^ | September 8, 2004 | MIKE HOLTZCLAW

Local readers on both sides of the political spectrum want to check out "Unfit for Command."

Phil Pons of Newport News ordered his copy early, so he was one of the lucky ones.

............Pons pre-ordered his copy through Beck & Stein Books, a locally owned Port Warwick shop that does not ordinarily stock books with an inflammatory political tone. Because Pons ordered early - and perhaps because the shop had requested only one copy - Beck & Stein received his book on its Aug. 15 release date. Local readers who had reserved copies through the larger chain stores had to wait up to a week while Regnery printed more copies.

............While conservatives have snapped up copies of the book to read the attacks on Kerry's character, many Kerry supporters and undecided voters have also sought copies to learn more about the charges made in the highly publicized TV ads.

"Personally, I don't believe that all the things they're saying about him could be true," said Roger Thompson of Hampton, who got his copy last week. "I don't agree with the opinions that are being expressed in the book, and it bothers me that these people are attacking someone who served the country in Vietnam. But I wanted to read it anyway. I figured I couldn't say I disagreed with it unless I had actually read it."

Meanwhile, other local readers are just waiting to form their own opinions.

"I'm not going to say one way or another whether I believe the charges," said Nancy Reid of Hampton. "But I know I want to read them and see if they sound credible. It seems like the only thing anyone's discussing in this election is Vietnam, so I feel like I need to read this book to be informed."

I guess they stocked the one copy because a customer had pre-ordered it.

***Olson said that often a political book is popular for a very short period, "and then we are stuck with many copies of the book."

That's one of the reasons readers won't find the book Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry on Joseph-Beth Booksellers' best-sellers list or at the library.

"We actually got 100 in earlier this week and we had 100 reserved, so they never hit the floor," Allen said, noting the store expects more copies this week***

Anyone who reads the book will know Kerry inside and out.

Do I have to, is there going to be a quiz before I pull the lever?

I popped into a Borders (in NJ!) earlier this week and there was Lurch pointin' at me. They had it prominently displayed -- front and center -- right as one walks through the door!

'Was on a list at Borders for two weeks...stopped by yesterday and the clerk said all the copies are gone the day they come in and I had about fourteen people ahead of me.

Decided to go to Barnes & Noble. There was a display front and center - eleven copies. I bought a copy, and then did some merchandising/display work on the making the book even more visible before I checked out.

...Copies of Clinton book still stacked with dust gathering...

It took the Borders here in northern NJ one week to get me a copy after I ordered it. They even put one on display, which surprised me.

and it bothers me that these people are attacking someone who served the country in Vietnam.

Maybe they should take it up with their own , the one who attacked people WHILE they were still serving and being held prisoner in Vietnam.

The Regnery press run started with 85,000, and about two weeks ago I heard O'Neill saying they had 650,000 in the pipeline.

A sales manager for a Borders bookstore came in to Bush HQ yesterday to get her yard sign (we gave out 300 in 4 hours) and I asked her about how sales of Unfit were doing...she said they were hard to get from the publisher...SHORTAGE of the book, not unwillingness to stock is the problem. They got 4000 books to distrubite among all the Borders stores in Memphis area. Not enough to meet the demand.

I was reading it at the airport on my way to NYC last week and someone asked me how it was....I was truly at a loss for words. I felt like throwing up and crying about a million times and found myself shaking my head over and over again. I can't imagine even considering that man for President after reading it.

Just started reading the first/second chapter and really wasn't surprised that Kerry pushed some of the reunion vets aside so he could be front and center with the PCF in the background for his opportune "camera" shot. Equally galling is that Kerry and his "camera" crew packed up and left without even going to the memorial services for his fellow veterans. Kerry is a despicable self-serving low life.

I felt like I needed a shower to wash off the stink that Kerry leaves behind.
