Is that not chilling??? If, as Christianity teaches, 'there are no coincidences,' then this date was carefully considered. I gasped as I read it.

The Polish King Jan III Sobieski is still remembered in his home country as saving Europe at the gates of Vienna from the Moslem invaders. The whole of old Christendom should remember him and ponder on the renewed danger.

A better link to this out-of-copyright book is:

The Great Heresies
By Hilaire Belloc
This book consists of seven chapters (which are numbered slightly inconsistently in the text files below):
1. Introduction: What is a Heresy?
2. Scheme of This Book
3. The Arian Heresy
4. The Great and Enduring Heresy of Mohammed
http://www.ewtn.com/library/HOMELIBR/HERESY4.TXT
5. The Albigensian Attack
6. What Was the Reformation?
7. The Modern Phase

All of these chapters are provided courtesy of EWTN.

This is a "meta-book", which stitches together separate files elsewhere on the Web as they appeared in a previously published book. It is subject to removal if someone produces an integrated edition; if this happens, The Online Books Page will point to the integrated version.

The only problem with this viewpoint is that the Siege of Vienna was the last gasp of a greatly over-extended empire, not the high-water mark of an expanding one. The Ottomans were already at least a century behind in technology and falling farther back all the time. Had they taken Vienna it would have made little difference in the long run. That they took several more centuries to collapse completely had nothing to do with their internal strength and everything to do with European politics and dissension.
