(Page 71)"Today we are accustomed to think of the Mohammedan world as something backward and stagnant.... We cannot imagine a great Mohammedan fleet.... (Belloc warns to not be complacent!)The last effort they made to destroy Christendom was contemporary with the end of the reign of Charles II in England. It failed during the last years of the seventeenth century, only just over two hundred years ago. Vienna, as we saw, was only saved by the Christian army under the command of the King of Poland ON A DATE THAT OUGHT TO BE AMONG THE MOST FAMOUS IN HISTORY -- SEPTEMBER 11, 1683."

The barbarians have long memories for this kind of stuff. They've never gotten over the fact that they lost Spain as their gateway into the rest of Western Europe.

The only problem with this viewpoint is that the Siege of Vienna was the last gasp of a greatly over-extended empire, not the high-water mark of an expanding one. The Ottomans were already at least a century behind in technology and falling farther back all the time. Had they taken Vienna it would have made little difference in the long run. That they took several more centuries to collapse completely had nothing to do with their internal strength and everything to do with European politics and dissension.

YES, it is an amazing book to read. I was reading it in bed before I went to sleep -- hahaha, like watching a Stephen King movie to relax you. How about where he says, "You think Islam is dead? NO, it is just quiet right now. I will not be surprised if my grandsons again see an uprising." Talk about prophetic...
Did I post it on news/activism? Should I have? I am not very practiced at the FR nuances.... plz advise.
