Won't be a Pfc for long - expect a quick advancement.

Fernandez ran out of ammunition for his M-249 machine gun. He sprinted to the disabled Humvee and grabbed a damaged M-240 machine gun and dashed back to his position to continue firing. The M-240's protective hand guards had been blown off, and Fernandez said he burned his hands in about 10 minutes of sustained shooting. DAMN! This is valor. Of course, this pales in comparison to Kerry's bravery in shooting the wounded VC boy in the back, but it's still fairly impressive.

Thank you for the article, FMC! That's one brave young man!
If I recall correctly, the SGT with him who was awarded the Bronze remained behind for long enough in the disabled Humvee under Fernandez's cover fire to damage the radio so that the enemy could not use it against US Forces after they abandoned the Humvee. Imagine having the presence of mind to do that while taking incoming!

It is a delight to share such amazing articles of our military.
I recall the incident as you described, thank you for adding it to the thread.

Good job, soldier! Kerry isn't qualified to shine your boots.
