What they fail to point out is that there were no F-102's for George W. Bush to fly when he was in Alabama, so how could he pass his readiness test.

That is an excellent point that I have never seen posted elsewhere. (I may be new but I have lurked for a long time) Thanks for the always interesting analysis.

They fail to point out more than that -- the Air Force was phasing out F-102's and transitition to the other planes during this time. If you were not staying in the Guard, then you were not going to transition. The F-102's left were being flown by people staying in until they could transition to the F-101 or F-106 which was replaced by F-16 in some places and F-4's in other places. Since the President was not staying in the Texas ANG, then no need to keep flying as there were not enough planes with the F-102's going to the boneyard.

Once you are getting out and no longer flying, flight physicals are not mandatory unless you want back on flying status. There was a shortage of flight surgeons during the Vietnam War so anyone not staying on flying status did not get a priority for a physical.
