The AF BEGGED me not to enter the AF as a pilot. They had too many.

However, THEY had signed the contract WITH ME ... and despite their begging, I demanded that they fulfill their contract and enter me into pilot training. They held me back 8-9 months first, but I did finally go to Laughlin. The AF was DESPERATELY trying to get rid of pilots with the RIF (Reduction in Force) stuff. They were more than happy when someone like Lt.Bush asked to be given a non-flying position, for whatever reason.

For some reason, Yahoo AP left this paragraph off:

The newly released records do not include any from five categories of documents Bush's commanders had been required to keep in response to the gaps in Bush's training in 1972 and 1973. For example, National Guard commanders were required to perform an investigation whenever any pilot skipped a medical exam and forward the results up the Air Force chain of command. No such documents have surfaced.
