IIRC the religious cults got their operation tactics from the communists.....Read the book "Eleana". Written by the son about how his mother gave her life to save her children from the communist take over in Greece. It's a plan used by the terrorist today too.
That's exactly right. They preyed on psychologically vulnerable people and demanded their allegiance to a group myth as penance for their "sins." No dissent was tolerated. They weren't simply liars; they also coerced and manipulated others to promote their lies.
