Beslan School Toll Could Top 500 (180 still missing)

Officals say 180 people are still missing after the school siege in the Russian town of Beslan, Sky News reports.

It now raises the prospect that more than 500 adults and children were killed during the three day drama.

On Sunday morning the death toll was put at 358 including all 35 gunmen, who died when Russian troops stormed the building.

The news of the higher casualty rate came as residents of Beslan began to bury the victims.

Relatives of the deceased have been allowed to enter the burned out shell of the school gymnasium where 1,000 people were held for 62 hours.

Officials say 323 people including 156 children were killed-excluding the hostage takers-and more than 540 injured, most of them pupils.

Around 450 people are being treated in hospital.

Pictures show nothing but empty space where the gymnasium used to be. However, I have heard that some of the terrorists hid in the basement and dragged the young girls off to other parts of the school for torture.

Why the news blackout in America ? I just don't understand it. Somebody in the administration needs to get out front on these Islamic attacks on Russia. Where is Homeland Security and why have they not at the very least mentioned that perhaps it might be a wise idea for people around schools to keep an eye open? It is amazing.

God forbid an attack on one of our schools should happen...it would be a disaster. Not only the loss of life but it would put us all at greater risk by perhaps electing a man to the White House who can't make a stand on anything.

Because the administration has taken a silent approach to the attacks they have left themselves wide open to massive amounts of criticism should something like that happen here. These Islamic attacks upon Russia are right out of the Al Qaeda play-book. That fact will be widely played out on national t.v. hour after hour, day after day, up until the election in the aftermath.

Someone with more contacts and pull than I needs to get in touch with this administration and have them get out in front on this possible situation immediately. I have some suggestions on how to go about informing the American public in order to perhaps prevent the same type of school attack that has occurred in Russia.

1.) Homeland Security should have a press conference in order to address the possible threat to our schools....this threat has never been addressed and yet it is an Al Qaeda tactic.

2.) The President should ask Americans to volunteer their eyes and ears at their local schools in order increase vigilance and create a larger state of awareness.

3.) The administration should suggest that local and state police chiefs update school building blueprints and layouts and have them on hand in order to respond to such an attack in a quick and timely manner.

4.) Alert all school administrators that evacuation drills should be run along with the standard fire drills that take place from time to time. This way students will know where to go in the event of such an attack.

I am sure that there are more things that can be done. From what I have seen so far...it seems to me that this isn't even on the radar. After (God forbid) an attack like the one on the Russian kids can you hear what will be said? "The President failed to mention this." The President failed to warn the American people about this threat." "The administration failed to protect Americas most precious asset..our children." And on...and on....and on....

This administration must do something to address this real threat and address it now ! The only way the media in this country will pay attention is if the President of the United States addresses this immediately. And unfortunately the media is the only way Americans will be made aware of this at all. The hurricane did not kill 156+ children in a school. Islamic terrorists did in a quiet town in Russia.

And the silence is deafening.
To have John Fonda Kerredy win due to an attack of this type is just what Al Qaeda and their allies want. And that would be tragic for all of us. Please pass this on to the proper people if you have the pull. Stay vigilant.

I'd not heard of individual torture besides killing all the men in the first day. They had hid their ammo beneath the floor boards of the gym. With over a thousand people in the gym, each person had about a half of a square meter to sit upright. They were not allowed any other position.

As at the WTC, a number of bodies just evaporated, leaving no identifiable remains. The true count will have to wait until all the affected families can compare notes.

Actually, the President did release at least one (possibly more) statement; however, it's been buried beneath all the mindless, repititative videos of wind blowing and rain falling in Florida--not mention every possible bit of trivia having to do with bypass surgery. I would think this story would warrant at least as much air-time as Hurricane Frances, but that's not been the case. Instead, we were treated to Geraldo bemoaning the fate of whoever was at the helm of the sailboat in the ocean--even though it turned out the sailboat was empty, anchored for the storm. Fox News should be ashamed of itself!

I sure am glad you wrote that, and well written it is, by the way.

My wife and I are absolutely apoplectic about the msm, Bush, et al., treating this as a non-event. It takes a lot to get me riled up, but I am now. The lack of national outrage over this makes me wonder what the future holds. I haven't heard a peep out of anyone with any stature. This should have been the headlines in every single paper, every single day, since the story broke. Included should have been the pictures from the scene, so the doubters could see, once again, the real face of islam.

You missed numbers 5 - 7:

5) REPEAL ALL GUN LAWS, which violate the 2nd Amendment and restrict the ability of the public to DEFEND itself.

6) TRAIN and REQUIRE all school Administrators and Teachers to carry a gun---on their person---so they can DEFEND their school children from HATE-CRIME-FILLED-TERRORISTS!

7) ALLOW and ENCOURAGE Christians and Jews to be ARMED within their respective houses of worship, so they can stop the HATE-CRIME-FILLED-TERRORISTS when they are brutally attacked by them!

At a minimum, there should be at least a couple of armed people at each school, church and synagogue.
