Even before Zell Miller jumped Chris Matthews last week, I noticed something had changed. During the entire week, when an interviewer colored a question with anti-GOP shiboleths, the person being interviewed shot it down...aggressively.
I believe Karl Rove and gang perceives a wounded enemy after the damage the MediaCrats did to themselves over the Swifty story. The blogoshpere whipped their a$$ in that case.
I think the turning point was the Michelle Malkin interview on Hardball. It was such a grand display of the left's rhetorical trick of twisting what a conservative says and mistating their position over and over and over. Michelle was caught flat-footed by it...she should have directly challenged Chris's misquote. I think the Bushies said "never again". Note that Zell Miller, in his tirade against Matthews, referred back to the Malkin case.
It appears to me that, after the Malkin ambush, Rove and company decided it was time to smash the media's biased concept of conservatives. I believe the talking points must have gone out...don't take it anymore. Slap 'em when they preface a question with some insult to conservatives. When David Gergen tried the old trick of tying Zell to southern racists, Laura Ingraham jumped on him like a junkyard dog and forced him to retreat.
It happened time and again last week...conservatives refusing to move on until the host retracted some implication that the GOP is mean, heartless, racist, etc. This is new to me. Did anyone else notice it?
The media will be throwing all sorts of garbage on Bush in the next 2 months, and it will be interesting to see if the people see these media attacks as further reason to rally TO Bush. Bush and Rove could subtly ridicule the media as Kerry's running mate to drag them down with Kerry's reputation. The media will have some hard choices ahead if the numbers hold and this is really a Bush country. They, like the French will have a choice between ideological purity and public support ($$).
Somewhere on this forum, I read a comment that said the magic phrase is "What [name the candidate] needs to do to win." That phrase indicates that the candidate in question is in deep doo-doo. I heard Juan Williams say it over the weekend in reference to Kerry. He said, plain and day, "What Kerry needs to do to win..."
Whatever the message strategy is, it's working. I have noticed that the conservatives have been more pointed. They must have somebody really good providing the talking points or they're practicing mock debates. The message is finally getting out and there's blood in the water.
No, I haven't -- but I'd pay 50 cents to see Laura jump ugly on Gergen. He was such a go-along guy I scarcely counted him a Pubbie, which he once was.
They have to be careful about it, though. The LameStream Effluvia will retaliate with editing. They'll pretend to be interviewing live but go to tape before they put it out, and edit their subjects, and plead constraints of time afterward. You watch. They'll go to canned and snipped stuff.

Spiraling down the ol' drain.
That's what I meant in my original post where I said the media was wounded by its refusal to cover the Swifty story. The blogosphere beat their butts on that one...and got their first big taste of what it feels like to WIN. Since then we've seen example after example of blogs forcing Old Media to retract false stories.
And the Old Media still doesn't get it. They don't understand that it was absolute fury over media bias that drove the blog coverage of the Swify charges. The allegations had been around for a long time. But when the Swiftys' ads began---and Old media ignored the story---it ratcheted hatred for the media to such a degree that it exploded in the blogosphere. Old media doesn't still doesn't understand that.
That is the liberal solution to fixing the schools. We all know how great that works.

I did notice that the GOP felt free to openly criticize the media in their speeches - Guliani talked about Bush standing up in the face of media criticism; Bush's dig about the NY Times' report on post-war Germany; "Maybe that person is now writing editorials."
I thought it worked well.
Not only are they wrong, but they are so pompous and haughtily project an "intellectually" superior condescending attitude!
Think of The Maltese Falcon where 'Bogie grabs Joel Cairo(the effeminate wuss played by Peter Lorre) by the collar and cuffs him. Lorre bleats, “I told you nevvver to touch meeee!” and 'Bogie says 'sumpin like, “I'll slap 'ya and you'll take it!”

That pretty well descibes how Gergen looked after Laura Ingraham got thru with him. She slapped him down til he looked like a dog being washed.
Which reminds me: Every time Gergen says Zell Miller should just go ahead and declare he's a Republican, somebody should say to Gergen, "Well, why don't YOU just go ahead and declare you're a Demcocrat?!"
It is my hope that the Pubbies that are taking the bull(sh*t media) by the horns are doing so because they have sprouted a set of their own - not because they are under the direction from Mister Big (Rove).
It is telling that while the net, talk radio, FR, the blogs and all of the rest of alternative media information streams have been breaking story after story and winning new converts in a modern and informed grass-roots war, our political betters have been so retarded in reacting to such a clear and obvious problem as monolithic media bias. It is also telling (or damning) that this 'fight-back' sea change, if it really is permanent within party ranks, was precipitated, not by a Republican, but by a Democrat - Senator Miller.
Miller resonated because he spoke to us - the people that have made this revolution happen - NOT because he said the politically expedient things that scripted party animals do. He voiced MY rage at the media bias. He shouted about MY anger over the lying duplicity of JF'ingK's campaign and record. In short, Mr. Miller spoke MY thoughts out loud and showed to me that I was right. Millions of us that have sought information and solace from each other in mutual political commiseration know this to be the case.
If what is happening in the response tactics to media bullying and lying is part of Rove's uber-genius policies, then I would say he is a day late and a dollar short. This is something that should have been done long ago - and would have been - if we had a seriously real crop of statesmen instead of political operatives.
Mr. Rove's abilities aside, I believe far too much credit is taken for the clean and righteous actions of a few and the groundswell of support from millions of mute voices back home. In my opinion, a fine example was the 1994 backlash against the RAT treason going on in the White House. Pro-2A people and anti-abortion folks tirelessly fought the krinton occupation and woke many, many of their neighbors from their deep slumber. As usual, the reigning political genius of that time, Newt Gingrich, took full credit for the November vote and spun it into an endorsement for his agenda. Hogwash. The vote in 1996 showed that this wasn't so because many recently activated voters just stayed home.
Now, I'll give credit where credit is due, too. When President Bush carried his copy of Bernard Goldberg's 'Bias' into the presidential helicopter with the cover face exposed and visible to the eye and camera lenses, I was thrilled. Of course, the media screamed about the slight. In my world, my next step would have been to put projections of the complaining journalists articles up on a screen at the next press conference and demand from the offending press members why the hell they wanted to abolish free speech and why they objected to the President keeping himself informed.
In the future, it would be wise for Republicans to sprout a set of their own and do what is right - forcefully if necessary - instead of waiting for a green light from the bowels of the White House.
