This looks to me like local citizens trying to do what they can. But they all have the same weapon so maybe it's the authorities.

I think those were the locals. It was reported they went around to the back and broke through a wall and got a lot of kids out through that whole.

This is a very rough, agricultural type area, where men are very much men. :-)

What gets me are the two Russian soldiers with kids. One looks shell-shocked and out of his element, the other appears to be tender, encouraging.

re: "I noticed how very thin some of the children were" I work with Russian orphans who come to our area for camps a couple of times a year. They frequently have health problems. I noticed in the photo that showed the boy's face that he had tooth problems. Few of the kids that come here are properly nourished and almost every one needs medical attention. Bless their hearts! They arrive here at 3 AM after a 24 hour flight from Russia. They have nothing but the clothes on their back and they speak no English. It's quite a culture shock. It breaks your heart when the host families have to separate them from their little friends the first night! As bad as that it, it's much worse when it comes time to say goodbye at the airport! I have a hard time shooting for the tears in MY eyes. Here are a few pictures of their departure after spending three weeks with the host families.

Citizens who had weapons joined with the soldiers to fight the terrorists. In addition to the fact that it was their families & neighbors in there, I heard there is a shortage of soldiers/police in that area.
A good example why the citizenry should be armed.
