Strong Earthquake Jolts West Japan,Tsunami Warning
Sun Sep 5, 2004 06:47 AM ET

TOKYO (Reuters) - A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 on the open-ended Richter scale shook western Japan on Sunday and officials issued tsunami warnings, broadcaster NHK reported.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the quake, but NHK said a tsunami measuring 20 inches had already reached the Wakayama region.

People were being warned to stay away from coastal areas, NHK said.

The strongest tremors were felt in the Nara area, the ancient capital of Japan where there are many temples. The quake measured five on the Japanese scale of seven.

I was half asleep when the tremors hit! My wife, holding out infant child looked at me puzzled, "What!?" "Do you feel that," I said, seeing the $30 lighting fixture (cheapest in Japan) slowly undulate from the ceiling. "No, what?" She said. I turn to NHK. Tsunami warning! 50 cm WAVES!

When a boring earthquake comes, it's more fun to be out drinking. The shaking of a 3 magnitude earthquake in Kyoto when one is half asleep can sometimes be confused with an ambitious wife taking business into her own hands.

I'm sitting on the 11th floor of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. I felt both of them tonight. I have my passport in my pants which are arranged like a fireman's turnout suit next to the bed. Mini-mag light clipped to the belt as well.

I've been through a couple of the Seattle quakes, and I don't like them a bit. At least you can see the hurricane coming and flee or batten down the hatches. Earthquakes are out of the blue.

Do these tsusami warning ever pan out? I can't remember ever hearing about an actual tsusami in modern times. I think there was one in Alaska about 60 years ago but I could be wrong.

Strong quake jolts western Japan
TOKYO : A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale shook western Japan on Sunday, injuring two elderly people and causing minor tidal waves. No immediate damage was reported from the tremor, which the meteorological agency said happened at 7:07 pm (1007 GMT), with the epicentre located off Kii Peninsula, some 450 kilometres (280 miles) west of Tokyo.

Typhoon Lashes Japan's Okinawa Island
TOKYO (AP) A typhoon billed as the strongest to hit southern Japan in at least three decades lashed Okinawa island with heavy rains and high winds Sunday and headed toward Japan's main islands. Fifteen people were injured, a news report said.

I choose to reply to you because Sam Adams makes the best beer in the world, 350 yen a bottle in Japan.

Don't worry people, especially those in Tokyo. The earthquake happened most likely because of a constriction or underground earthquake on the Tokai trench way out in the ocean. The tsunami warning is only up to 1 meter, no worrys. When you live in Japan this long, well four years only actually, you wake up after a long night of drinking to your small wooden apt. vibrating softly for a few seconds, and its like a mother's cradling arms, you go back to sleep. My wife didn't even notice the first quake tonight, and I didnt really notice the second. A REAL quake is hell, and the 7.1 Tottori quake a few years ago really rattled everyone after the Hanshin Quake of '95. And yes, MANY MANY people died of a tsunami from a 8'r off of Wakayama in the 40's. Of course, they were country people, so it wasnt really recorded, but many people told me that it created 5-10 meter tidal waves. I hope that these two are not just a preclude.

I'm a good 200 miles away as the crow flies, I felt both the first one and another aftershock about 30 minutes ago (11:55 p.m. local). As usual, okusan didn't feel the first one (although she said she felt kind of dizzy for a bit). I pointed out swaying window shades and turned on NHK then she believed me.

Aftershock tsunami warnings on NHK cover a much larger area than the first one.

We lived in Yokohama 1951-1961 and experienced more than a dozen "good ones" as my dad called them. Rocking side to side was small stuff. When the house and street went up and down; hang on !
I saw one of the old blue and white electric street cars jump the tracks during an up & down quake. It stayed upright, but there was a great shower of sparks.
