My first post ever (hope I'm doing it right).
I was extremely dissappointed to hear George Bush promise to renew the Clinton Ugly Gun Ban if it hits his desk, but I didn't worry too much because I knew the race would be close, and Bush is smart enough to know he will lose without the Pro Second Ammendment vote.
That was before the current collapse of the Kerry campaign (not that I have any problem with seeing Kerry go down in flames). Now I am worried about the size of the bounce and it happening so close to the last four days available to ressurrect the Ugly Gun Ban. I am concerned GW might think he no longer depends on the Pro Second Ammendment vote, and Feinstein (along with some turncoat senators like my own Gordon "Never Getting My Vote Again" Smith) might see this as an opportunity to sleaze a renewal onto his desk, and he would sign it. That would be the worst possible outcome, because it keeps the unconstitutional Ugly Gun Ban in place, and would probably put Kerry in the White House. I myself have vowed that, should the "Assault Weapon" Ban still exist on November 1, I will not vote for Bush on November 2 (though I still won't vote for Kerry).
Any thoughts? Is this a legitimate concern, or should I start folding my tinfoil hat now?
I think it is a moot issue. I'd be surprised if any of the Republican legislators passed this before the election.
It is a make it or break it deal for many of their constituents.
It is an ineffective law based on emotional response to the weapons rather than their lethality.
It works equally well for either party.
If we keep the pressure up, we can sunset this unconstitutional monstrosity.
BTW, Good job on your first post!
Gun issues have really broken in the direction of the repubs since 2000. Have you heard Kerry talking about banning guns?
I'm not worried.
You logged on to see if we won't vote for Bush?
BWAAAAAHAAAAAA.
Seriously. If he signs the AWB...he will lose. Count on it.
The 2nd amendment is safe with this president.
It will not be allowed to come up in a house committee - so there will be no vote. And I doubt the senate will take it up knowing that it can't pass the house.
The ban won't be resurrected until after Kerry wins.
Just exactly WHEN did Bush say he will sign the AWB?
I haven't heard that in a long time.
In fact all the pro-AWB people seemed to be having a fit, because Bush IS allowing it to expire.
Worst case scenario I forsee is it sunsets this month, and the House and Senate reinstate it next year.
Thank you, I thought I was the only one thinking that.
Any thoughts? Is this a legitimate concern, or should I start folding my tinfoil hat now?
No, never fold it. A tinfoil chapeau is stored carefully in the Y2K shelter when not being worn on your head.
As to the Klintoon/Brady AWB, It is set to die/expire on September 18/19, Automatically. If GWB is smart, he'll let it die. Tom Delay has said there's not enough support in the HR to renew the ban, Senate w/the RINOs is another matter. :|
