New Independent Poll Shows U.S. Senator Jim Bunning’s Lead Widening
Bunning for Senate ^ | 8/19/2004

Fort Wright, KY - Citizens for Bunning today announced a new independent and non-partisan poll showing U.S. Senator Jim Bunning’s lead in the U.S. Senate race strengthening. The SurveyUSA poll of 679 likely Kentucky voters (+/-3.8%) conducted Aug. 13 – Aug. 15 has Senator Bunning leading his opponent 57% to 33% with 11% undecided.

This same non-partisan poll done three weeks ago had Senator Bunning beating his opponent by 18 points, and now its most recent poll shows his commanding lead growing to 24 points. Senator Bunning leads among conservatives, moderates, and independents, yet liberals and John Kerry supporters overwhelmingly endorse his opponent. Senator Bunning also leads among females, males, all age groups, and all geographic areas.

The poll also reveals that support for President Bush over John Kerry is growing, too, by a margin of 56% to 39%. As well, the survey shows that the Marriage Amendment to appear on Kentucky’s ballot this fall is supported by Kentuckians by a margin of 74% to 22%.

"This non-partisan poll confirms that Kentuckians approve of Senator Bunning’s record and leadership on the issues, and that they trust his judgment,” said David Young, Campaign Manager for Senator Bunning.

“While Kentucky’s support for Senator Bunning and President Bush is growing, our opponent and John Kerry seem to be floundering. As Kentuckians get to know the candidates, they’re choosing strong leaders instead of liberal flip-floppers who have a hard time connecting with voters,” continued Young.

Of note, the independent poll reveals that Senator Bunning’s strongest support is in Eastern Kentucky where his opponent was born and resides. There, Senator Bunning leads his opponent 65% to a whopping 26% in his opponent’s own front yard.

“It looks like those that know Senator Bunning’s opponent the best seem to approve of him the least,” concluded Young.

The poll was conducted for Louisville's WHAS-TV and Lexington's WLEX-TV. The site http://www.surveyusa.com/2004_Elections/KY040816pressenamend.pdf

This is getting quite embarrassing for the Democrats. They are having people follow Jim Bunning every where he goes from the time he gets up in the morning with video cameras trying to get him to lose his temper to catch on video and use in campaign commercials with the measely amount they will have for TV.

At this rate it could be a larger margin of victory for Bunning than the McConnell/Weinberg race in 2002. To think at one point Bunning was considered vulnerable.

WIDENING???? Holy snickerdoodles!

I guess the only question is whether he can break McConnell's record.

I remember that day in '64 when he retired 27 consecutive batters; Fathers' Day if I recall correctly against the Mets.

That is a great news. And it is a great news for Republican.

Democrats do what they do best that is to run dirty campaign. When we get them back at their game, all they do is cry and scream that it is not fair.

He's already broken McConnell's fundraising amount from 2002.

This is probably even higher now...this is a pre-convention poll. I would not be surprised if Bush is now around 60% in this state.

This will help in the effort to take control of the Kentucky House of Representatives, currently controlled by the Dems 64-36.

I heard Jim Bunning speak at the Lincoln Day Dinner prior to the Republican Primary for Ky. Bunning is quite a good speaker for a baseball player.

He is a good solid conservative.

Bunning's wide lead is great news. With the gay marriage ammendment vote, Bush, and Bunning on the top of the Nov ballot, I hope it will protect Rep. Anne Northup and knock out Nick Clooney.

I don't see Jim Bunning doing as well as McConnell in 2002, as Bunning is more outspoken and controversial. But he should top 60%. My hope is that Bunning uses his campaign funds for a massive GOTV drive, to help Anne Northrup and Geoffrey Davis over the top, and maybe help Republicans expand their margin in the state Senate.

Incidently, McConnell's 2002 margin is the biggest for a Republican U.S. Senate candidate in KY history, beating that of then-Sen. John Sherman Cooper in 1966.
