As any American could plainly see, Zell Miller spoke the truth.
This is so important. Do not misunderestimate it, as President Bush might say. Zell Miller began his speech and ended it with a simple premise. His family is his dearest treasure. Who will best protect it?
In his speech, he leads us through America's history as to who have come together from both parties to meet this criteria. He also takes us through John Kerry's past to show us Kerry would have denied the tools of war to those who are directly responsible for the protection of our country, and consequently, our families.
He reminds his own party and all Americans that winning an election is not as important as winning a war when our familiy is at stake.
The reason this speech reverberates so deeply is because it is the truth.
I am simply in awe of a great American like Zell Miller. It is unfathomable that anyone who lives in this country would discredit him, but of course some were already attending to that task even before he spoke.
I have a strong feeling though that as we continue to fight this battle for which there is no end in sight as evidenced by 200 and more innocent people dead, many among them defenseless children, and scores beyond that wounded, who were just showing up for school that Zell Millers words will remain withus for a long, long, time.
History will show he told the truth, and just how important that truth was at a time when a single decision of electing a president could mean the difference between life and death.
And, that this nation knew the truth when they heard it.
I know I did.
P.S. I nearly did change my mind though when I saw those doctored photos of Count Zell. Good thing I don't believe in Vampires...And they say the Republicans are running an ugly campaign.
And what was that about our allies in the war on terror being "the bribed and the coerced"? Yea, Kerry's off to a real running start on expanding the coalition with that remark. Good Lord.
Zell Miller simply put his party on notice. They have drifted so far to the left, that the party left him instead of him leaving the party
These people aren't desperate. They moved on past that to frantic about the time Zell Miller got half way through his speech.
A very thoughtful piece. Welcome!
Zell had a great positive affect. I am sure of it. He is truly a great man and patriot.
Less ideological people than we here will listen to Zell Miller, because he is a democrat. I think in the weeks and months ahead, the effect of his words will prove to have been very powerful.
Welcome to Free Republic. Nice bit, but it helps to reference it or note it as a "vanity" if it's your own work.
Glad you survived. No doubt Zell was talking from the heart if not the soul. Remembering the speech I wonder if he was tipping us off that the military draft is coming. When he mention Truman and the peace time draft.
I hope people over here really paid attention to what happened in Russia, because that could happen here. Teachers need to start packing guns.
From what I understand, it was determined that terrorists brought down those two planes and I have yet to hear any coverage on that this week. Its as if its already forgotten.
Very sad.
I just watched his speech again, and in light of the horror in Russia his words could not ring truer.
Zell Miller is the leader of a salvage movement that will move in after the November trainwreck, remove the mangled corpse of the 60s Left, and start rebuilding the Democratic Party.
Truman and Rayburn have risen from the grave.
Noted, and no dishonesty intended. I thought the ending gave it away anyhow.
With all due respect to Arnold, McCain, and Giuliani, I think Bush's 11 pt bounce came entirely from Zell's speech. It cut right to the core of the debate in plain-speaking words that really hit home with the electorate. The 52-41 poll was taken before Bush spoke, so I'm giving that bounce to Zell and hoping more to come tomorrow and Sunday from Bush's speech.

It did. :)
But posting it as a "(vanity)" in the title insures that you get credited for your own thoughts.
