AP Bias strikes again (Free Republic is cited for finding bias)

AP Bias strikes again

The AP is really showing their bias again, except this time, they have been caught in the act.

Sharp eyed posters over at Free Republic spotted this story about the president's reaction to news of Bill Clinton's upcoming surgery:

WEST ALLIS, Wis. - President Bush (news - web sites) on Friday wished Bill Clinton (news - web sites) "best wishes for a swift and speedy recovery."
"He's is in our thoughts and prayers," Bush said at a campaign rally.
Bush's audience of thousands in West Allis, Wis., booed. Bush did nothing to stop them.
Bush offered his wishes while campaigning one day after accepting the presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in New York. Clinton was hospitalized in New York after complaining of mild chest pain and shortness of breath.
Bush recently praised Clinton when the former president went to the White House for the unveiling of his official portrait. He lauded Clinton for his knowledge, compassion and "the forward-looking spirit that Americans like in a president."

Needless to say, there was massive outrage. Many on the thread had listened to the speech live and heard no boos at all and were screaming liberal media bias...and rightfully so. Others e-mailed the AP to express their displeasure. So, minutes later, a new version gets posted to the same yahoo link and another thread pops up on Free Republic:

WEST ALLIS, Wis. - President Bush (news - web sites) on Friday offered former President Bill Clinton (news - web sites), who faces heart bypass surgery, "best wishes for a swift and speedy recovery."
"He's is in our thoughts and prayers," Bush said at a campaign rally.

Of course, someone with access to the raw wire posted this as well to archive this monumental, and perhaps intentional screw up.

Someone at the Associated Press has some major explaining to do.

UPDATE: Just so there is no doubt, a Freeper posted a screen capture:

UPDATE #2: Boston.com still has the first version up on their site.

UPDATE#3: Another Freeper who attended the rally checks in.
I wouldn't have posted this as a separate topic until I heard on the radio on the way home from the rally that the AP had reported the crowd booed when it was annnounced that the former president had been hospitalized. That is a bold faced lie. I understand it was later retracted, but that's like unringing a bell. I do not think it was in error, either, since the writer further stated that 'Bush did nothing to stop them.' Shameful.
The rally was amazing. I don't know how many were in attendance, but the crowd could not have been more enthusiastic.

UPDATE#4: Some of our comments are featuring posts from liberal bloggers who are taking the first version of the AP story at face value. However, another reader has provided a sound clip of the quote in question: Judge for yourself.

The Yahoo message thread is now going on and on about the generous media censoring itself by no longer running that initial account! I can't believe this, but I can't manage to post to the Yahoo message board at the moment, either.

I would love to hear/see this part of the speech. Any ideas as to where it could be found??

I don't know, Zee. The folks at FR all were listening to it and then the AP filed their story. I'm sure it will be aired tonight on C-SPAN like they usually do.

Who wrote the original, and when are they going to get fired for making things up that never happened?

I really hope this gets exposed nationally, if it is indeed a fraud. I noticed Reuters didn't even mention any "booing" in their report and they'd be on the front lines of reporting it if it really happened, IMO. Something's really fishy here.

Competitor. The same group that owns the conservative Washington Times now owns UPI - and Helen Thomas made a quick exit after that happened.

The crowd reacted with applause and with some "ooohs," apparently surprised by the news that Clinton was ill.

Here's the latest description of the story from the AP/Yahoo link. I think it's the most fair.

Has anyone seen this version yet? So many versions, so little time. From this one:

LOLOL!

Nice try, AP. I guess it was all a big Oopsie!

I faxed since I couldn't get through on the telephone.

I did get through to AP NAtional 1-212-621-1600

The first time I was told it was my problem to research the AP REGIOANL writer who wrote this. She said it was not national.

The second time I called I asked why Deb Reichman hasn;t been fired yet. The fellow answering the phone put me on hold. When he got back to me he said he doesn;t know who wrote the article.

212-621-1600 answers the phone at least.

I called the Madison AP office and a recording says no one's around, if it's an emergency call the Milwaukee office, or call the national number. The only thing is no one's answering in Milwaukee or at the National number which is for everybody.....800.242.9022. Where is the President heading next and can we call that office to find out which AP reporter is covering him? Let's smoke 'em out of their holes

There's a big difference between 'ooohing' from surprise and BOOOING.

Me thinks Scoot Laidlaw is our guy. A google search of "name + bias" shows:

Results 1 - 10 of about 460 for Scott Lindlaw +bias.
Results 1 - 10 of about 160 for Deb Riechmann +bias

They should be sued for practicing journalism without the appropriate skills.

It's kind of hard to hope and pray that Bill Clinton will recover but that's what we're supposed to do if we're decent human beings. I guess I'm not much of a decent human being but I'm gonna try.

Ack! This makes me crazy that a lying reporter would attempt to smear the Bush supporters this way.

Is there NO shame? We are so used to the spinning and the slanting it hardly makes a dent anymore. So let's move on to just making it up.

AP should hand this reporter their butt and kick them out - NOW.

A BIG difference between OOOHH and BOOOOO. But like I said, if there was boo-ing, it was for the heart attack. I boo every heart attack I hear about.

But this must not go unpunished. Whoever the slime was that lied to the American public while being intrusted with the badge of "press" must be taken down NOW!

It is almost ashame that these kind of lies can't be a crime. It is a crime to lie to congress, it's a crime to lie to a judge, it's a crime to lie to your mother. But it's an error to lie to every citizen in the USA that depends on the press for the truth. Amazing!

(Potential) Perp's email addr: Scott.Lindlaw@AP.Org

Hey Scott;
You name is tagged all over the I-Net as a potential reporter that lied (for food) about (*) Bush, Wisconsin, and audience "boo-ing" comments re: Wm. J. Clinton.

Can you tell me if you wrote this false article? You know, a google search of "Laidlaw + bias" yields 480 'hits'. Not quite in the league of Ron Fournier (8,670) or an Adam Clymer (2,060), but you are getting there.

Are you the author? If not, you may want to flush out the perp, if for nothing else to get the hounds off your trail coming next week.

(*) Suggest once in a while your refer to Bush as President Bush, unless such respect is a career ender at the AP.

Competitors.

But, the national press corpse is SO biased this year that NO writer is going to turn on his "band of brothers" and truly report what the others are lying about.

What really happened?

I think a dnc faux fax sheet got directly in the hands of the AP "reporter" who then just re-forwarded to the national center. Without, as usual, ever checking what the dnc had said.

Got another AP number for you:
202-776-9400
This is the D.C. office out of which the two a$%-clowns in question are operating out of; they are traveling with Bush. Aperna Kumar, the lady with whom I spoke, says AP has disavowed the original story and the 'he' made an honest mistake thinking it was 'boos' instead of 'ooohhhss'. She explicitly said that they are NOT giving out any info on the names, but they gave away the fact that he/she was traveling with Bush.
