Fox News was the winner in the TV ratings battle during the Republican National Convention.
On Wednesday, for the second straight night, Fox beat out not only its cable rivals but also broadcast networks.
In the 10 p.m. hour Wednesday, when all the networks were airing convention coverage, Fox averaged a whopping 5.9 million viewers. NBC had 4.5 million, ABC claimed 3.3 million and CBS got 2.6 million.
In another upset, MSNBC, usually the third-rated cable news network, was beating CNN. CNN averaged 1.202 million viewers on Wednesday between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., compared to MSNBC's 1.214 million. It was the second straight night that MSNBC beat CNN.
Final convention ratings numbers come out later today.
But the numbers seem to support the argument that cable news has become politically polarized. CNN was the top-rated cable news network during the Democratic convention earlier this summer and now is dead last.
..And I bet it will be three in a row after last night's figures are released.
woohoo- death to the Clinton News Network!
Can't wait to see those final convention ratings numbers!
Too bad Fox's pundit-driven coverage was so lame.
In the 10PM hour they beat all 3 broadcast networks COMBINED!
Bbbbbbut what about all those protestors (Kerry supporters) that said "Fox News Sucks?" You mean, they were WRONG?
I notice they tell us CNN won it during then rat convention but I don't think they got near the viewers as FOX got with this RN convention.
They would have had even more if some of their hosts had shut up and let people watch and listen. They should ask how many people moved to C-SPAN because of that.
how many people watched the DNC total?
People are finding Fox.
They should issue the coup de grace by putting Special Report with Brit on the FOX Broadcast network, through election day.
Head to Head with TOM/DAN/PETER...
Would have been even higher if they hadn't used Greta for the After-Convention coverage where she had loose canons like Estrech on -- and managed to cover the Laci Peterson case when we were watching for convention analysis -- I switched to MSNBC for the after-convention coverage because they did have both Republicans and Dems and fairly, fair coverage -- plus it was highly entertaining with the Chris Matthews/Zell Miller dust-up... Fox should take heed, that was a stroke of genuis of MSNBC to do their analysis the way they did -- I would have enjoyed a Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Alan (Yuck) Combs, Dick Morris, Newt Gengrich, etc., after-election coverage instead of the Greta Hour and then reruns.
thanks for your post -- add Brit and the Beltway Boys to the lineup I would have used after-hours.
There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning....
And that, I think, was the handle --- that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting --- on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave...
HST.
Would've been higher if I even -got- Fox News here in the middle of the New York and Philadelphia markets in the middle of New Jersey. But I don't. :( :( :( :(
Qwinn
people were watching PMSNBC just to see if little chris was going to get beat-up again.
I guess Fox is just so far ahead of the rest of the pack that you're starting to expect too much - either that or you're a Kerry man!
You're correct CNN only managed to be the top CABLE channel during the DNC convention they were stil overshadowed by the major networks.
In the case of the RNC convention though Fox manged to overcome even the major networks. A huge accomplishment.
Maybe some people just like there news served up in a fair manner instead of having it interpreted for them by the likes of CNN, ABC, NBC, etc, etc.
