We peasants might need John Kerry to translate the Economist's cover line -- "Je ne regrette rien."
But the rest of the British newsweekly's special issue on the Bush presidency -- by far the best of the Bush cover packages appearing this convention week -- is in the smartest King's English.
Unfortunately for Bush partisans, however, the Economist's assessment of Bush's first term does not constitute much of an endorsement for four more years of the same.
In fact, the magazine -- no friend of Kerry, liberals or the welfare state -- opines in its editorial that more of the same "mixed bag" of successes and failures at home and abroad by Bush is exactly what will not do.

FR has to have one token Bush hater they let stick around and I guess you're that guy. GO W GO!!!
The economist magazine is no friend of liberals?
Bwahahahaha
I actually find the magazine very balanced. The Economist was one of the first magazines to back the war in Iraq.
The Economist is very much in the column of social liberalism. It is very supportive of sodomy, abortion, etc. and it's stance on any moral issue mirrors that of Planned Parenthood. I've been reading it for years (necessary in my line of work) and there is nothing the editors of The Economist hate more than evangelical Christianity.
The magazine's stance on economics is considered "conservative" in Europe, but it's main stance is that it promotes the private sector on enterprise and strong government intervention in monetary policy.
Any aggressive pro-growth policy they pooh-pooh as a policy that promotes "over-heating" and any anti-growth policy they oppose not because of the inherent immorality of it, but because it promotes "stagnation."
Ideologically, the magazine might as well be written by Robert Rubin.
Can you spell P-R-O-J-E-C-T-I-O-N?
144,000 jobs last month, a 5.4% unemployment rate.....the US economy is outperforming all the EU weenies, Japan, Canada, and all other first world countries.
"No regrets." An Edith Piaf song thought to have a ring of autobiography to it, sort of like Sinatra's "My Way."
I have to confess I don't subscribe nor read it, but I do work for the postal service and I see magazines every day. Every time I see the Economist's cover, its bashing Bush.
More proof that the Economy is ALOT more than just a "bubble", it is an expansion and a BOOM.
And That's DESPITE 9-11's affects on the economy, and despite the INHERITED Clinton recession. Bush's tax cuts WORK.
Isn't it just toooooo bad that British journalist's opinion matters about as much in our election as our journalist's opinion do in their's;not a tinker's damn.
Unfortunately Europeans, including the left of Great
Britain, have deluded themselves into believing that their opinion matters on this side of the pond. It doesn't any more than Michael Moore's does. especially when we've got a president who means what he says, does what he means and doesn't need the approval of feckless,weak-kneed Euros.
Under Bush's administration we have suffered an economic hit that was measured in the TRILLIONS of dollars on 9/11/2001 and a recession left over from the Bubba years.... And we have bounced back from it all! That is AMAZINGLY PHENOMENAL!!..
Yes it is not purely the actions of the president of the administration, but the american people, but it still speaks volumes of just how strong our economy is.
98% of all companies in america today have 400 employees or less, 60% of all companies have 1-4 employees in america today! These types of businesses don't show up in many of the job numbers used by economists or politicos.
Its amazing that in america 60% of all companies are 1-4 employees! That's an amazing euntrepreneurial spirt! Don't buy into the lies... America has taken hits, but she is strong.
Bush, in my mind, was a tremendous leader who pulled the nation together and struck back at our attackers in a bold and decisive manner. His tax cuts greatly helped the general economy, and considering what America was facing we have recovered magnificantly and in just a short time. Why do people so easily forget what Pres. Bush was dealing with? He deserves nothing but credit.
Dubya's record deficit spending and increased National Debt didn't occur all in one day.
No, most of it occurred in RESPONSE to one day!!
Just rid us of Daschle and sit back and watch.
Doesn't The Economist hate everybody who isn't a socialist or collectivist?
I still remember a cover from the Economist when Reagan was elected. It showed him as a cowboy holding a gun. It is lurking somewhere in my files... Their perceptions of our best leaders haven't changed much through the years.
Medicare overhaul signed; Bush invokes memory of Lyndon Johnson
Reviewing 2003, Bush Emphasizes Medicare, Not War
Insurers to Get 10.6% Increase From Medicare (Bush to increase payments to private plans & HMO's)
Bush Budget Raises Cost of Medicare ($400B grows to $540B for overhaul)
Increasing welfare entitlements is a rather odd RESPONSE for somebody who's supposed to be "conservative", don't you think?
As if European economic policies should be held up as the standard for the rest of the world.
