OH YEAH!!! this is great!
You CAN relate! :-)
Freerepublic might have some Russian liaisons. It would be a great outreach program to Russia, to build a partnership in fighting terrorism, and creating a better way of life.
As President Bush said, this is the new century of Liberty. What better way to send out missionaries for Liberty than to help those who are such innocent victims of terrorism?
And who better to start one of the very first Liberty outreach programs than members of Freerepublic?
Lets show the world what American "grassroots" can do. The roots of Liberty are just waiting to be nurtured in Russia.
And what would you have done?
Russian security services are incompetent and corrupt.
Russian military have not been paid for months. One gave his life saving some children. Why don't you take your garbage elsewhere.
You're blaming Bush?
Pardon me, genius, but how would you have dealt with this situation?
I will remind you: the terrorists were fanatic Muslims who didn't care about dying, they just wanted to kill as many people as possible.
I will remind you: the terrorists were not allowing the hostages food and water--they would only have gotten weaker as time went on (less able to flee, more likely to die from smaller wounds)
I will remind you: the terrorists had rifles and suicide bombs and other bombs designed to slaughter the hostages--and they were planning to use those bombs from the start.
What brilliant plan would you have come up with?
Jihad on islam!
For the sake of the children (and a what if)...
I do wish Russia would semi-revert back to the old Soviet Union. No Islamofascist would EVER F with the Soviets. Why? Can you say tank divisions and carpet bombing? Can you say low yield city busting Nukes? Can you say completely rolling over cities, no matter who what or where.....
What is the first rule of the woods?
Don't F*** with the Bear!! Guess what? Checnya has now F'd with the Russian Bear.
2 airplanes, a subway and now this. I seriously doubt Russia will go to the UN.....
They are not afraid of a quick and relatively painless death from setting off a bomb. A slow and prolonged death is another story. Take the surviving terrorists and put each in a room of parents of dead children, give the parents appropriate tools, and pick parents who promise to have it last at least 48 hours
When the Romans were unable to reach an accomodation with an enemy, and had found the enemy so intractable as to be incapable of keeping a peace agreement, they would, after conquering, kill every living thing in the enemy's territory: men, women, children, dogs, horses - everything.
The Romans did not do this out of savagery, but because they had determined over the course of hundreds of years that such measures were the only effective means of causing barbarians to fear Rome enough that they would stop committing depradations on the fringes of the Empire.
Russian military has been getting paid on-time in recent years. Its effective has not increased much. Russian military and paramalitary forces are responsible for allowing this massacre to happen. Members of the russian border patrol accepted a bribe to let the Chechen terrorists into Northern Ossetia, then Russian special forces botched the rescue attempt (yet again). My "garbage" is based upon reading russian press in russian.
I merely pointed out that the Russians usually bollix up operations of this kind. After-action reports here suggest that they surely did it again, with a failure to establish a Spetnatz perimeter, with a failure to be ready, with a failure to control the local population. That doesn't mean that this situation wasn't awful, it was. That doesn't mean that the terrorists weren't determined on murder -- they were.
And, as some have pointed out on this thread, it's not as though other countries haven't done this kind of thing a lot better, e.g., Israel at Entebbe. And it isn't as though other countries haven't done just as badly, e.g., West Germany at Munich in 1972.
There is such a thing as doing a good job and such a thing as doing a bad job, even in extreme situations. The Russians usually do a bad job.
We all are basing our thoughts and opinions on the reports of the press. Various press. We know the press does slant, twist and censor ... unfortunately we have no way to know how much and when. Much information is surpressed or not released yet. HOW MUCH? WHEN?
It doesn't change what happened. We are dismayed and disparing of this despicable act.
Well, unless you are reading different newspapers and watching different news media than I am, Bush has always supported Putin against the terrorists. Example, when the terrorists took over the theatre. Bush condemned the terrorists, not Putin.
I think you are confused.
If you are like Kerry and are equating intelligence with knowing languages, you are mistaken. Even babies can parrot different languages.
I just heard several news reporters saying they had NOT been paid in months. And if you are reading Russian newspapers in Russian, then you are reading propoganda.
I'm not supporting the Russian government, but I think the Russian military has the same problems of non-support as our U.S. military. And that Russian soldier who saved the Russian child is still a hero in my book. The rest of what you said is still garbage in my opinion.
Janet Reno must have taken lessons from the Russians at Waco then.
