Kerry More to Blame Than Bush if Campaign Has Been 'Debased'
The Omaha World-Herald ^ | September 3, 2004 | Harold W. Andersen

A question well worth careful consideration by the voting public was raised by a surprising statement (surprising to me, at least) that Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel made this week to the Iowa delegation at the Republican National Convention in New York City.

Hagel criticized the campaigns of Pre- sident Bush and U.S. Sen. John Kerry for "debasing" the presidential campaign by focusing too much on Kerry's military service in Vietnam three decades ago.

Hagel's criticism seems to me to raise this serious question: Does the "debasing" blame truly rest equally on Bush and Kerry?

After all, Bush has asked Kerry to join him in condemning all attack ads by organizations allied with one party or the other but technically exempt from the funding restrictions imposed on the two party organizations.

And when it became known that two members of the Bush re-election campaign team were involved with the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth organization, which is running ads critical of Kerry, both were dropped from the Bush campaign team.

I had thought it was common knowledge that a Bush-bashing campaign low road is being traveled by such Kerry supporters as Michael Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Chevy Chase, Hollywood movie producers, authors, so-called comics, a number of television personalities and Democrats who have raised millions of dollars (through so-called 527 organizations) to finance anti-Bush Web sites and advertising.

Kerry would make disagreeing with him the equivalent to questioning his patriotism. He's acting like his service in Vietnam entitles him to the Presidency. He's a making a joke out of himself.

sKerry is on Fox Cable now.

He summed up the President's speech: 'All hat - no cattle'.

Not sure if they are going to cover the whole thing. Greta is on now.

Kerry defenders have indeed taken to arguing that what did or did not happen in Vietnam is immaterial to the campaign and those evil Swiftees should stop harping on Kerry's lies.

Well, this argument doesn't hold water as Kerry has based his campaign on his time in Vietnam, but more importantly, he himself won't stop arguing that his Vietnam record is critically important.

If he isn't arguing that he proved his patriotism in Vietnam when his voting record is questioned, he's claiming that Bush isn't fit to be president because he wasn't in Vietnam.

Hagel's integrity?

As fictitious a concept as El Dorado, nor in either case worth looking for.
