NEW YORK - Democratic Sen. Zell Miller (news, bio, voting record) was tough on his own party's presidential nominee, but things got even hotter when the combative conservative all but challenged an interviewer to a duel.
Fresh off a keynote speech to the Republican National Convention that blistered John Kerry (news - web sites), the Georgia senator engaged in a raucous television interview with Chris Matthews that got increasingly rambunctious.
The host of MSNBC-TV's "Hardball with Chris Matthews" is known for an aggressive, rapid-fire interviewing style, and the two men interrupted each other several times during the program.
"I wish we lived in the day where you could challenge a person to a duel," the 72-year-old Miller angrily told Matthews, 58.
Miller was at the Madison Square Garden convention site and Matthews was at an MSNBC set several blocks away, so there was no chance of a physical confrontation. But at one point, the senator told Matthews, "I wish I was over there, where I could get a little closer up into your face."
Miller's comments came during an interview in which Matthews pressed the senator on barbs he launched during his convention speech against Kerry, the Massachusetts senator and Democratic presidential nominee.
Miller said no one has been "more wrong, more loudly, more often" than Kerry.
When Matthews said he wanted to ask about Kerry's war record, Miller said, "Are you going to shut up after you ask me? Or are you going to give me a chance to answer it?"
By Thursday morning, Miller had simmered down, but just a bit.
Appearing on "Imus in the Morning," Miller said a man his age should not be "coming to New York and getting involved in all this stuff. He ought to stay down in Young Harris" the north Georgia town where he lives "with his two yellow labs, Gus and Woodrow, and let the world go by."
His barrages, which brought the GOP delegates to their feet cheering, prompted sharp counterattacks from Democrats. Vice presidential candidate John Edwards (news - web sites) said some of Miller's charges were "just false."
A lifelong Democrat and ex-Marine, Miller is retiring from the Senate in January.
My money is on Zell!
Go ahead.. make my day!!!
I'll load Zel's pistols for him.
Vice presidential candidate John Edwards (news - web sites) said some of Miller's charges were "just false."
As usual with Breck girl...he says something, doesnt back it up, smiles like a dumbass and gets away with it.
I love how Edwards calls Miller's charges "just false" but can't give evidence as to how or present facts to counter Miller. I also love how absolutely stark raving mad the dems are over this--it's a good sign that Miller isn't just upsetting them by "changing sides" but that he's hit too close to home and struck a raw nerve by daring to reveal the party's problems from the inside.
I'm with you. Miller put Matthews in a slumber mode which is fine with me. I read some excerpts and Matthews really skewed the facts and evidence presented by Zell in his speech at the convention. Kudo's to Miller!
Miller is old-school. He'd even kick the crap out of these so-called "gangsta" rappers.
There are an awful lot of folks out there who would volunteer in a second to shoot Chris just to save Zell the effort.
Aint that the truth Mike...
I'm surprised he didn't follow up with a Haliburton or AWOL ding.
Most news analysts have focused on Zell's zingers at Kerry. But the real story is his withering indictment of the Democrat party. The party has gotten seriously off track with regard to foreign policy and defense (ever since the 60's and John F. Kennedy), and Zell told us so in no uncertain terms.
In fact on MSNBC's poll, Zell Miller is winning 86 to 14 against Chris.
Yahoo News tries to portray Miller as a senile kook, but succeeds only in sparking a renewed interest in dueling.
F'em. We need to steamroll these creeps like there is no tommorow. I think that if we pull off another 94' we will be able to shove it right down the libs throats for at least two more years.
I would be happy to second for Zell. I may be just a kid( (twenty years younger than Zell)but I have been told I am handy to have around.
The loser gives $10,000 to the winner's charity and can't take a tax deduction. One shot, 20 paces. My money is on the former marine.
