Americans stupid, says Latham foe (Australian politician)
The Advertiser (South Australia) ^ | September 3, 2004 | LUKE McILVEEN

Americans stupid, says Latham foe By LUKE McILVEEN in Canberra 03sep04 THE man chosen by the Liberal Party to remove Mark Latham from his western Sydney seat believes Americans are "stupid" and "have no idea how dumb they are".

Michael Medway, 25, also has advice for the "sad" people who drink Fosters Lager when overseas – "If you are that sad, stay at home, move to Rooty Hill and drink Fosters all night."

The insurance salesman from Liverpool has won Liberal preselection for the seat of Werriwa, but his colourful language and controversial views will have voters mistaking him for the Opposition Leader.

Mr Medway has spent much of the past two years travelling around Europe on Contiki tours and keeping a daily web diary – obtained by The Advertiser – for friends back home.

On a day trip to England's Stratford-on-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare, he became particularly incensed at a group of US tourists.

"Once again the dumb American tourists appear with their uneducated, stupid comments. I have given up detailing these – I now just look at them and shake my head," he wrote afterwards.

"I am sure that they have no idea how dumb they are."

Frustrated by his inability to find an Internet connection at a nearby cafe, Mr Medway confided in his diary: "The American next to me couldn't get it to work – need I say anything more than silly dumb American bitch!"

Mr Medway needs a 17 per cent swing to defeat Mr Latham, but the release of his colourful diary is unlikely to catapult him into Parliament.

Born and bred in Liverpool, Mr Medway told a local newspaper this week that his family home, where he still lives with his parents, was directly across the road from Mr Latham's former residence.

"He was always a nice neighbour, but this area needs someone young and in touch with their concerns," he said, before a strategy meeting at Liberal Party headquarters last night.

Prime Minister John Howard will use Mr Latham's past comments about US President George W. Bush as a strategic weapon in the lead-up to the federal election on October 9.

I have half a dozen Australian friend from Hobart, Fremantle, Perth and Adelaide. While not stupid, you give any one of them 3 or 4 beers and they get unbelievably idiotic.

The Oz-left is so mean because it is frustrated at its continued inability to take over Australian society.

At one time, they seemed to have everything going for them: strong unions, lots of immigrants, the backlash from the Vietnam War, a ready-made supply of imported propaganda from Berkeley and Pommy-land, and even some juicy CIA conspiracy theories.

Yet it all came to naught, and they are today objects of scorn and mockery to Australians who are not actually part of their movement.

"Just in case, though, if the Mohammedan hordes ever start south and you need help, you know who to call."

You know...the opinion that I (and a lot of Australians) hold of America and it's integrity make me believe that wholeheartedly!

I hope as much as you guys do that Bush wins.

God bless

See, that really surprises me,what you posted, because all the things that I know how to access(newspapers and such) out of Australia represent the whole of Australia as being rabidly liberal in the American political sense, opposed as a nation to the US and all its foreign policies(and they often don't scruple to criticise our domestic policies, especially when conservatives and Republicans are in the majority),and lately show the majority of Australia as being as rabidly anti-American as a Palestinian terrorist. The last resort is always to resort to the old canard of the "stupid American". How am I to know differently? When I first began reading Australian newspapers,it certainly disillusioned me of my pre-conceived notions of the US and Australia being cousins together kind of sticking our tongues out at the back of "Mother England",in a friendly fashion. I had no idea that the level of hatred I found existed, according to what I read.
And what I read makes it sound like this is the consensus in Australia, and that they would like to be as socialist a stae as any in Scandinavia.
So all I know is what I read in the Australian media, and hence my ignorance:)

Michael needs to get a life. He's just jealous of what we've achieved. I know this from personal experience with some Aussies in our family. They are basically out of touch with reality. We work hard for what we've achieved and they can't tolerate it! Too bad!! We don't get the long vacations and the huge social programs. The daughters (three of them) in our Aussie connection have all left Oz for greener pastures. Keep your Fosters, Michael. It $ucks!

I always laugh at foreigners who pronounce that Americans are stupid. I tell them "It must be the most frustrating thing in the world for you to know that a nation full of stupid people runs the world while your country full of geniuses is so insignificant." Then you sit back and watch their heads explode.

Good point. If all it took was population numbers or land mass, the soviet Union would have won the Cold War or India would rule the world-you'd think that the rest of the world would think that it's in their own interest, that if there must be a superpower, and there must, that better the US than Red China. I never saw such a good example of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Let's not start hating Australia just because of one liberal loon - I bet he doesn't speak for the whole country. I want to visit there someday, heard it's a beautiful place. And I think the Aussies sent troops to Iraq, didn't they? I could be wrong.

Right. And if it weren't for stupid Americans, this guy would have been speaking Japanese for the last 60 years or so.

I wanted to visit there too, until it dawned on me that every other animal there is venomous or poisonous. I thought I would just stay out of the water or the outback, then I heard about the funnel-web spider, that actually LIKES cities, concrete, and isn't bothered by dense populations. Now I'm scared to go,LOL.

Oh come on. Millions of people live there and don't suddenly die. I bet they'd be able to help you stay away from the poisonous stuff.

For me, far more scary is in Florida they have cockroaches (palmetto bugs?) that don't run away from the light. Aaaahhhhhh! Although when I visit my aunt down there I've never seen one.

But, uh, is this the American Spirit? The spirit that forged westward no matter what was out there? I think not.

On a related note, years ago I got the book "From Alice to Ocean", that chronicles the journey of a young woman from Alice, Australia to the ocean. She traveled by horse, camped out, and made it. Great pictures. If she can do it, I bet you and I could, too.

"Depended" as in took it for granted that it would be there, not "depended" as in was in need of it.

Hey, whatever. I've got a Gulfstream gassed-up at lax. You and me, what you say?

(Sorry, just kidding). I've, uh, actually, got gassed up a jeep wrangler that died on me this week. Working through the pain. Getting better, though. Got a couple of good mechanics working on it.

He lives with his parents, eh? Well, that certainly explains his viciousness and hatred. He resents his own failures but refuses to admit it to himself, so he takes it out on a "safe" target - Americans.

Insurance salesman? O Lord, deliver us from insurance salesmen!

Can't get his crappy dialup connection to work? Blame the yankee lady at the next table!

Clearly, this bloke is mentally unbalanced, and should never be handed the responsibility of deciding public policy. (Most of the modern Democratic Party falls under the same category, IMHO)

Furthermore, if he was to replace the word "Americans" with any other nationality or ethnicity, he would be publicly pilloried by the PC Police.

I don't think he is representative of Aussies in general. All my Aussie friends like Americans and see us more as far-flung cousins than as "foreigners".
