That's why they call them "barrier islands," they were meant to keep the sea away from the real coast. And building houses and hotels on these natural walls remains the dumbest human activity, except maybe building on an active volcano. This is the reason why our insurance will go up by an exponent of 10 after this hurricane season is over.
When's the last time more than a million people were evacuated from anywhere east of the East Coast? And why to we have to pay to rebuild them every damn year during hurricane season?
We cvan thank the LAWYER/POLITICIAN/ACTIVIST JUDGES for this giveaway of our money to these idiots and thieves --- The idiots are the residents -- you can guess who are the real thieves!
aren't the john-john's members of that group?

You are correct, it is very stupid. And the financial risks go far beyond insurance considerations. For those lucky few who owned land where that new 400-ft. wide inlet sits, they no longer have property under Florida law. What the sea claims, the sea keeps. Suckers.
Very good question. I've been asking that since I was a teenager. Nobody's ever even come close to answering it.
