MEDIA MONITOR: DICK & DOUBLE STANDARDS
New York Post ^ | September 2, 2004 | Editorial

Posted on 09/02/2004 6:29:30 AM PDT by OESY

...Dan Rather ...was one of several journalists who spoke of the vice president's speech as "the first appearance of a polarizing figure at the convention."

...Cheney wasn't the only one of last night's speakers targeted for demonization. Democratic Sen. Zell Miller, the first keynote speaker from an opposing party, was widely ridiculed as what Lauer (who first wondered if Miller "is really a Democrat") called "a Democrat in name only" — a sentiment with which Tim Russert agreed.

ABC's Peter Jennings last night listened to Miller complain about his own party's leftward drift, then asked him: "If you feel so strongly, why not just leave the party?" The Los Angeles Times noted how Democrats consider him a "traitor" and have resurrected the nickname of "Zig-Zag Zell."

And all three networks, as well as the cable news shows, aired clips of Miller's keynote speech at the 1992 Democratic convention, in which he ripped into the GOP as well as the current president's father.

The Media Research Center contrasts the sour approach to Miller's speech with all the giddy excitement the same journalists showed a few months ago at the media hope that John McCain might jump ship and run with John Kerry on the Democratic ticket. Or, for that matter, with the adoring coverage Vermont Sen. Jim Jeffords got in 2001 when he defected from the GOP and tossed Senate control to the Democrats.

The press read those events (or non-event in McCain's case) as showing that the GOP only has room for rock-ribbed conservatives. Yet, observes the MRC, "The networks have not touted Miller's speech as any kind of evidence of a failure of John Kerry's campaign or proof that the national Democratic Party has become intolerant of non-liberals." — THE EDITORS

Zell Miller is to the Democrats what Jim McDermott was to the Republicans. But better.

After last night's speech (which has got be be one of the most powerful speeches I've ever heard), they're gonna be referring to him as "Hurricane Zell"...

The party of the old media is so void of any real ideas that all they've got left is to try to tear down the other side with negativity. Pathetic really.

You've captured my mood toward the media this morning pretty well.

LOL

This convention has been great! They can't stand it.

Glad you cleared that up.

But as far as the 'Hurricane Zell" reference... BINGO! Excellent!

Last night Miller told all of America what we have known since day one. He got it out there and the 'old'media' is shuckin' and jivin' every which way to dismiss it!

It's a great feeling to see the 'real' America emerge from this long and grueling campaign! By God... sometimes great things come from solid convictions!

*Two lies in one sentence fragment. Not bad.

The old media, like old Europe, no longer matters.

That was then. This is now.

Maybe the most damning statement of the media in the whole article.

Lauer (who first wondered if Miller "is really a Democrat")

Let's see:
Zell puts his country and family before his party.
Zell believes his country should not outsource foreign policy or security.
Zell believes his country is a force for good in the world.
Zell believes his country should honor those who fought for her.
Zell is an honorable man.

Lauer is right Zell is not a Democrat - Zell is an American.

Huh? This wasn't in his speech last night!
