Well here's what I think about this issue..[following comments have been edited due to the proximity of the general election].

I'm glad to get that off my chest.

I have an idea. How bout rescinding all campaign laws, and start working your butts off to raise money for 2006! This law after law restricting free speech to gain an edge on the other side is ridiculous!

Why don't these damn politicians just STFU and put their hands back in their own pockets?

I'm so sick of Big Stupid Government - time for The People to throw these bastards overboard again; it's been a long time so maybe they've forgotten.

You have no clue. The first amendment was written to protect political speech. CFR makes political speech illegal 60 days out from an election. How can saying something be legal one day & illegal the next? McCain was wrong to introduce it, the idiots on the hill were wrong to pass it, Bush was wrong to sign it & the USSC was wrong to uphold it.

I feel much better, knowing that politicians and bureaucrats are going to protect us from too much unrestricted free speech.

What does that have to do with politicians passing laws restricting free speech? Total non sequitor.

This is what the GOP is becoming... and as a result, one of several reasons why I'm not so eager to vote for GWB in November.

You've read my mind. This is what pubbies get by electing moderates like no veto Bush who signs everything that comes his way.

There have been laws regulating electioneering speech for decades. One cannot go into a polling place and urge voters to vote a certain way. Saloons and bars are closed. Print advertizing is not allowed within a certain distance of the polls, etc.

Free Speech is not an absolute nor is it impaired by the MF law. As it stands only political parties are affected and even they are only affected if they are run by idiots. It never affected individuals whom were the ONLY parties recognized by the founders as having first amendment rights.

Despite all the clamour about lost rights the tiny Swift Boat group has negated tens of millions of dollars of RAT ads.

Wouldn't it just be a lot easier and cheaper on this to have no rules at all?

Free speech, 1st amendment, etc.

The Founders fought for and successfully implemented a system where only wealthy (read: land-owning) white males had ANY voice in government.

The constitution was largely written by Benjaman Franklin, while he was wealthy then it was written so that someone could start from a poor family and work their way up to become a great leader. Though I don't think he was the first, Abraham Lincon fit this mold.

the First Amendment should be the exclusive guide on political speech in any and every election

About 90% of FReepers agreed with you in that FR poll that was up for a few days.

But people were promising that it was all talk and it will never happen.

Political freedom, no matter if you are on the right or left, continues to be institutionalized.

Time for some serious Civil Disobediance.

That will never happen. The rights of individuals, no matter who is in power, continue to be chipped away as government continues to get larger and larger and takes on more services.

100% full disclosure just like the President has done on his website -- nothing less! If you give $20, it should be accounted for -- $100,000 is a joke to make that the point where you have to report.

This is idiotic. Just as GOP 527s are starting to rake in tens of millions from Alex Spanos, Boone Pickens and others--and after the Left 527s have ALREADY RAISED $200 million--the leaders of the Stupid Party have to cut us off at the limbs. MORONS! It was a 527 that cut John Kerry's campaign off at the knees! Ney should leave the 1st Amendment alone and stop wasting taxpayer dollars on such nonsense.
