WASHINGTON -- Officials say several dozen people have been sickened in a downtown office building.
D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesman Alan Etter said this is being treated as what he calls a "mass casualty" incident.
Ambulances are lining up in the area around 1990 I St., Northwest, and a triage area is being set up at nearby Murrow Park.
Because of the problem, 19th Street is closed at K Street.
There's no immediate word on what the problem is.

bump
I suppose it could be for real, but I'm betting on mass hysteria.

The question now is: How long after the substance has been confirmed to be pepper spray will we still frantically speculate about what the substance is?

"Pepper Spray to Blame for Illnesses Downtown"
Updated: Wednesday, Sep. 1, 2004 - 1:37 PM
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "WASHINGTON (AP) - Authorities now believe it was pepper spray that affected several people in a downtown Washington office building Wednesday afternoon.
Commander Cathy Lanier of the Metropolitan Police Department says between 20 and 30 people are being treated for eye irritations. Lanier says a group of kids apparently released the pepper spray into a shopping area inside the building at 19th and I streets, Northwest."
(confirmed that it was pepper spray released by kids, so the following is appropriate)
I've always preferred my buildings to be of brick and mortar. (And what about the poor souls who have to be the foundation? Do they get bathroom breaks while wedged in that tight little space down there?)
