MOSCOW (AP) -- Armed men seized a school in the Russian region of North Ossetia Wednesday morning and were in a gun battle with police, news reports said. The region borders with warring Chechnya.The seizure took place on the first day of the Russian school year, when it was likely that a large number of parents had accompanied their children to class.
The reports said the school was in the city of Beslan, which is about 10 miles north of Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia.
Vladimir Yakovlev, President Vladimir Putin's envoy for the southern region of Russia that includes North Ossetia, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying it was unclear how many children, teachers and parents may be held in the school.
There were no immediate reports of whether the assailants were making demands or indications of who they were. Police could not immediately be reached for comment.
In 1995, Chechen rebels led by warlord Shamil Basayev seized a hospital in the southern Russian city of Budyonnovsk, taking some 2,000 people hostage. The six-day standoff ended with a fierce Russian police assault. Some 100 people died in the incident.
That's a lot like blaming the USA for 9/11 you know.
My problem as a non-Russian is my country's contribution to the problem by being pro Chechen for so long. I wish the Russians luck and hope they kill all their Islamist scum.
bricking = breaking
scape = escape
Not really.
Gee, if they weren't nearly "always" responsible...maybe they would enjoy the benefit of doubt. Have fun with your VERY short stay here.
Agreed. I've long believed that terrorists would eventually target schools. After events like Columbine, the terrorists know the kind of horror that they can inflict on Americans by taking over a school and wiping out the children, there. And believe you me, depending on the school they pick, they could easily cover all the exits and wipe out damn near every student on campus with about the same number of men that they used on September 11th. I've BEEN to schools like that, and after looking them over, it becomes pretty damned apparent that it wouldn't take many men to seal the place, trapping the bulk of the students within, so they can fall victim to the terrorists (And no, I wasn't planning a Columbine :P My mind just wonders about tactical possibilities in certain locales every once in a while, and that school I went to for some Night School classes looked like a death trap, to me).
A woman was seen running behind the girl, and she was also led away.

Armed Russian forces stationed near the school.
Soldiers were seen behind a tank. The sound of gunfire could be heard.
It's just a matter of time.
Russian's contribution has been far greater, direct and very personal to the people they kept under their bloody heels for...how long was it?

Fox reporting live on this now.
Not long enough and not bloody enough as far as I am concerned, Muslim lover. Find any other excuses to excuse the Islamist scum?
FOX News cut in live:
Apparently these terrorist jihadists want some Chetchan soldiers released.
They claim if they are not relased these vermin will kill the kids.
Which part of Islam does, garandgal not know about? - Islam's pedophile prophet or the head cutting?
Sure...Stalin suck-up commie lover. Wow...I feel adult now.
They entered the school in a "russian transport truck." E.g. the type that soldiers would come in on. They came in firing their weapons.
400 people taken hostage in total, including about 200 kids.
