MOSCOW (AP) -- Armed men seized a school in the Russian region of North Ossetia Wednesday morning and were in a gun battle with police, news reports said. The region borders with warring Chechnya. The seizure took place on the first day of the Russian school year, when it was likely that a large number of parents had accompanied their children to class.
The reports said the school was in the city of Beslan, which is about 10 miles north of Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia.
Vladimir Yakovlev, President Vladimir Putin's envoy for the southern region of Russia that includes North Ossetia, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying it was unclear how many children, teachers and parents may be held in the school.
There were no immediate reports of whether the assailants were making demands or indications of who they were. Police could not immediately be reached for comment.
In 1995, Chechen rebels led by warlord Shamil Basayev seized a hospital in the southern Russian city of Budyonnovsk, taking some 2,000 people hostage. The six-day standoff ended with a fierce Russian police assault. Some 100 people died in the incident.
I'm asking YOU how you would advise Russia handle the situation.
You're obviously ticked off at the Russians. Fine. Tell the rest of the class how they should fix it in addition to your opinion of them.
Yeah, there's no reason why this won't all work out.
So? I didn't create their mess, they did. That's their problem.
And I'm a Caucasian!! LOL I didn't know that meant I was a Chechen.
["Remember, Russia is NOT a nice western country."
I've never forgotten that, and neither have any of the people who have lived under their bloody heel. As you point out, Russian troops are still there, and they have a long and brutal history there. What they have done is terror on a different scale.]
Russia was not IN Chechnya until the terror against russia began. The moronic muslims brought the wrath of Russia upon themselves.
Because of this needless act of terror, a LOT of chechen muslims will die. --Excuse me if I do not shed a tear.
Muslims are getting all uppity and murderous lately, and its time to put them down.
Force is all the islamic barbarians understand. Russia will have to kill a lot of them before they get the point. The peoper response to this terror attack is to kill muslims.
There is NO justification for this act of terror. When chechnya embraced terror they invited invasion and occupation. Chechen muslims will reap what they have sown.
Thanks for your input.

Unlike the Ukranians, the Poles, the Hungarians, the Finns...or any of the other countries that were put under the heel of the Soviets?>
"Because of this needless act of terror, a LOT of chechen muslims will die."
Of course, and a lot of Russians are going to die, then a lot Chechens will die, then a lot of Russians will die.
"Force is all the islamic barbarians understand. Russia will have to kill a lot of them before they get the point."
Yes, the Soviets were very good at that...and now it comes home to roost.
You're very welcomed.
When chechnya embraced terror they invited invasion and occupation. Chechen muslims will reap what they have sown.
Your "horny eggs screwing and making a chicken" theory is ripe for challenge.
Well said. And not much more should be said about it here, least-wise we provide encouragement to the enemy.
Apparently these people have rigged the building (doors etc) with explosives.
Russians will soon demand Stalin's return....
Sadly, there are those who hesitate; the blood of these and other victims is on their hands.
End terrorism by ending is-slime.
At the same time just last week several thousand nazi's marched in the German town where Rudolph Hess was buried.
You're either pat or willie. Or both.
Nope, just someone who remembers the evil empire President Reagan brought down.
This is all Bush's fault..........
Now that we have gone over the Demwits talking points this action will help Bush.
