Bush Twins Get a Little Payback in Prime Time

By JODI WILGOREN

Published: September 1, 2004

Maybe girls do just want to have fun. The Bush girls, at least.

Forget four years of shunning the spotlight. President Bush's twin 22-year-olds, Jenna and Barbara, strutted into it last night with a sassy, sexy serenade to their parents at the Republican National Convention, every wisecracking word broadcast live on national television. They spared no one.

"She thinks 'Sex in the City' is something married people do, but never talk about," Jenna, the blonde, razzed her grandmother, Barbara Bush. Jenna was referring to the HBO program "Sex and the City."

Mrs. Bush's namesake, the brunette, said of her alma mater, "When your dad's a Republican and you to go to Yale, you learn to stand up for yourself."

And dear old dad?

Jenna Bush took Mr. Bush's words about his own youthful indiscretions as her punch line. "We kept trying to explain to Dad that when we were young and irresponsible," she said as Madison Square Garden erupted in cheers, "well, we were young and irresponsible."

For a coming-out party, the girls were notably underdressed: Jenna in a shiny brown jacket over white T-shirt and jeans, Barbara in a sleeveless black dress with embroidered yolk. But they embraced that aesthetic, seeking to fill any coolness gap their father might face with the MTV set by mentioning OutKast and even its lyrics.

Mr. Bush's daughters have slowly been emerging as public figures in recent months, occasionally appearing on the campaign trail. "Since we've graduated from college, we're looking around for something to do for the next few years," Jenna said by way of explanation on Tuesday night. "Kind of like Dad."

The twins' turn yesterday at the microphone, part of the introduction of Laura Bush, brought the first public words many had heard from their mouths.

Barbara Bush took the teeniest slap at the opposition, invoking the story Senator John Kerry's older daughter, Alexandra, briefly stole the show with at the Democratic convention in July. Ms. Kerry described a dad so devoted that he dove off a dock to save her pet hamster from drowning.

"We had a hamster too," Ms. Bush said last night. "Let's just say, ours didn't make it."

It would appear that many in the base were pretty critical this evening.

Or didn't you notice.

Just because the base is seemingly with them for now, doesn't mean they like being ignored, BTW.

The speeches to date were wonderful, so let's start talking about them. :-)

Rudy was my favorite, then Arnold and then McCain. Laura Bush was very pleasant. I missed the former Miss America. Did anyone see her speak?

The appeal to the base is coming... just watch...

Tomorrow, they finish playing to the undecideds -- the 18-24 year olds, the soccer moms, the minorities, the immigrants, etc., by highlighting Zell Miller to appeal to those so-called "Reagan Democrats" that have not come home yet.

Then once they have all of these groups interested and drawn in, they start appealing to everyone by trotting out Cheney and Bush.

Bush and Cheney will give dual messages to appeal to both the base and the undecideds. Cheney might do some heavy lifting against Kerry.

What are you talking about?

Maybe you were living abroad at that time or perhaps you were just unconscious.

Critical of these girls?

If that's all it takes to set a few of the base off, then let them be furious and maybe they're leave.

BTW, the "base" is the people who VOTE for Bush; the "base" is NOT the people who sit around BARTERING their votes.

I have three daughters and there is something about that age, just after college, when they are so beautiful and frisky and vulnerable,,,it is an age that always worries me. I think they ought to get married! Then we can all relax.

I was living right here; I suppose, of course, you don't consider AMNESTY pandering, huh?

LOL!

The people who keep saying they're the BASE; well, from the looks of it, the "rest" of the base, including all the people that the malcontents in the "unhappy base" don't like, are pretty darn happy right now.

I guess that's what bothers the "unhappy base."

I agree. I told my cow-orker here that I wish they wouldn't play these young women as dumb.

It is amazing how resoundingly, to the tune of a TRUE mandate, Ronald Reagan was able to win two presidential elections, without pandering.

It is amazing how narrowly, without pandering, George W. Bush was able to win one presidential election.

After reading the pro and con comments about the Bush twins' speech tonite it occurred to me that these poor kids have had to endure their father being brutalized daily by the commies and their running dogs in the media for months not to mention that arch-liar Kerry and his poodle john edwards.

How unbearable it must be to hear your parents demonized constantly. The girls know he's not a dope, or a bad man. But they really are just kids so what can they do or say about it?

And think about what the grandparents must feel. If it was me, I'd need sedatives daily to keep from exploding with anger.

Anyway, I thought the girls were cute and I was just happy to see them and see that they and the whole family is holding up under what has to be the most brutal media onslaught in history.

1980

Reagan - 489 electoral votes

Carter - 49 electoral votes

1984

Reagn - 525 electoral votes

Carter - 13 electoral votes

I don't know what you would call them but they sure look like lanslides (translation MANDATES) to me!

Absolutely!

I'd need sedatives daily to keep from exploding with anger.

I think maybe we both decided a long time ago that it wouldnt' "do" for us to be in pubic service or the floor of the Senate or House.......LOL. I'm pretty sure it would involved the sergeant at arms dragging us out.......LOL.

I am well aware how large his margins were.

What WE were all mocking was your belief that he did it without PANDERING to anybody.

Ridiculous.

I hate to disappoint you but Bush has been far too accommodating to the liberal's agenda. I had decided to not say too much and vote for the Constitutional Party candidate or Mel Gibson.

Tonight I have wavered and think I might vote for Bush BECAUSE of his daughters appearance. They came across as children who were loved and who returned that love to their parents.

They weren't phony,or psuedo-sophisticates or pontificating, posturing wannabe's,they were refreshing, genuine and kind of made fun of themselves. The most positive feelings I have had about Bush ever were elicited by his girls. My son,mid thirties, said the same thing. Strong families are the basic building blocks of a strong and good society,I saw a strong and loving family tonight.

Absolutely. It's way too bulky for my bag and a little on the heavy side. Heck, I'll give you 15%.
