As other posters have written, Fox was trashing them also. I was just cringing when they spoke; it was pretty bad. I wish someone had reviewed their routine before they got up there.
But the Fox group didn't seem too impressed with Laura's speech either. I thought she was great. But surprisingly, the MSNBC group (Martthews, Andrea Mitchell, Meacham from Newsweek, J.C. Watts and Scarborough) seemed to have glowing reviews about Mrs. Bush's speech. Well praise God for that!!!
I thought the ladies were a bit tasteless....
National TV, they could have done better...
I figure they were there so people could take a break before Laura arrived...
Shouldn't hurt, but sure didn't help.
Arnold, now, best Political speech I've heard in years...maybe since Reagan. Awesome speech.
FYI, another FR threat with some well intentioned but critical comments about the Bush Twins was cross posted on DU. Let's not give those idiots any ammunition. Loose lips, etc.
Well...FOX was doing it also...and I hate to say it...they are both two airheads.
I found my self being embarrassed for them. I found myself switching channels, subconsciously, then realizing, "wait a minute, I want to watch the convention". And having to switch back and endure more.
If your going to put someone on that stage, and use up VERY valuable time, you better make it count.
I think the time could have used more wisely.
The girls were fine.
Liberals have to find something to complain about. Since everything about the first two nights of the Convention has gone without a hitch, the Bush daughters are all they can criticize.
Petty whiners.
Fox News was not exactly complementary to the Bush twins either. In fact, they were not even complimentary about Laura.
"MAKE! IT! STOP! [08/31 10:28 PM]
The Bush daughters could have been worse. They could have come out and armpit-farted the Star Spangled Banner.
I am stabbing out my eyes now...
UPDATE: Gee, did Dick Cheney look like he wanted to smack the twins around a bit?
What, exactly, were Jenna and Barbara thinking? "Hey, it's our debut on the national state. Let's begin the evening by making fun of our grandmother, a beloved former first lady. Then let's remind everyone of Dad's aimless and drunken years. Then let's remind people of our incidents of underage drinking."
I'm not all that keen on anybody's family being used in political ways. Especially children. I think politics should be a serious and professional undertaking. Leave the families out of it. I think the Kerry girls AND the Bush girls should stay home. They're not germane to the issues.
My take is that political pundits and news reporters are not always the best judges of what average americans thought of the Bush twins or Laura Bush. I thought both speeches would likely be well received by real americans independent voters, and women voters.
Pains me to say it, but the FoxNews people, Barnes, Kondrake, Liason and Kristol didn't have such shining reviews either. I didn't hear what Brit had to say. I think they're (the twins) are as cute as can be and in spite of the pundits opinions, they probably reached alot of young voters that saw a side of them that one doesn't get to see.........they're young, fun-loving and have a knowledge of pop culture as we know it. Wall flowers they ain't. Give em a break.
Maybe the girls didn't give an Oscar performance, but what were we looking for?
I was pleased to see the way they were dressed. Kerry's daughter thinks the way to get votes for her father is to 'bare it all' in public. Take your pick cute or trashy...it's up to you.
I thought they were adorable and funny - considering they had to read a script in front of millions. They sparkle and are beautiful - They are charming - Laura was lovely and elegant as always - However, it perhaps would have been better to end with Arnold...
I turned on Cspan to get the rest of the evening.
On Fox, most panellists did basically the same thing:
Kristol, Kondracke, and Fred Barnes said both the twins and Laura didn't do much to help the President's cause--one of them even called the twins "ditzes".I was a bit surprised that they all took this same tack---maybe it was mostly by comparison with Arnold's speech. But a few minutes later, Chris Wallace from the floor took issue pointedly with all 3 of them, and thought all the women did very well indeed, with the twins coming across as completely unaffected and natural.
Whether it was good or not, though, was also irrelevant, as far as real news is concerned.
SO, if CNN dwelt on that, they were stupid.
The girls' function was simply some filler time between Laura's and Arnold's speech.
I think Laura did great for the women who were listening.
And I thought Arnold's speech was magnificent.
Many of the freepers on the live thread were pretty shameless too.
I thought what the daughters did was inappropriate for the occasion, and puerile. But it is all harmless and irrelevant. Laura Bush went on for too long, and was too into policy, and that grated too.
Even Barnes, Kondracke and Kristol on Fox were critical of the girls - it must be tough for such knowledgable, dynamic sophisticates as are these press people to sit through even a few minutes of innocent, good-natured folksy fun which offers so little substance for them to prognosticate and pontificate about when it's all over......
