DNC "WAR ROOM" SPOKESMAN JAY CARSON: “When it was popular to be for the Iraq war, [Kerry] was for it. Now it’s popular to be against it, and he’s against it.” (Todd S. Purdum, “Rivals Mine Kerry Senate Years For Material To Slow Him Down,” The New York Times, 1/25/04)

We have seen this video at kerryoniraq.com. My son requested and got a DVD from the BC '04 campaign to pass around at school and work. He's 19.

I found the following statement quite interesting.

"2002: Two Days After Voting For Use Of Force Resolution Against Iraq, Kerry Said There Was No Justification For Initiating War With Iraq. Kerry stated, "If the president of the United States decides to go unilaterally, I think it would be one of the great catastrophes and mistakes of our time ... There is no justification whatsoever for sending Americans, for the first time in American history, to war as the belligerent, as the initiator of it ... without showing an imminent threat to our country." (C. T. Revere, "Sen. Kerry: War Resolution Not Absolute," Tucson Citizen, 10/14/02) "

I was not very attentive in history class, but I seem to remember something about the U.S.S. Maine, and a supposed explosion in some harbor or another in Cuba. It was never proven that the Cubans or whoever did anything to cause the explosion, but The N.Y. Slimes or one of Hearsts papers drummed up a nifty little war against Spain based solely on innuendo and half truths.(some things never change with the media) I belive this was around the turn of the century.

I may be wrong, and if I am I would appreciate someone correcting me: but if I am correct, wouldn't that make us the belligerents in that war?

No one accused "the Cubans" of setting off the explosion- the accusation was against the Spanish, with whom the Cubans were at war in their effort for independence. We entered the Cuban civil war [already in progress] on the side of the Cubans against Spain and so began the Spanish-American War.

From the Spanish perspective both the Cubans and the US were belligerents.

But I believe it is accurate to say the Spanish didn't set off the explosion on board the Maine, and the NY Times did play a role in the accusations and so inflamed the calls for war.

Senator John F. Kerry:

"Just tell me what it is you want to hear. I can be... flexible."
